Hello all,,

i have a big task ahead over 400 LTO 4 Tapes that was backup using network7.  The client now uses network 8 and LTO6. They want to me to move the data on those LTO4 tapes to the LTO6.

If [nw8 server = nw7 server]; then

stage ssids from LTO4 tapes to LTO6 tapes

else

   scan LTO4 tape

   restore it to temp location

back it up to LTO6 media

This really depends on your hardware setup and especially whether the backups belong to more than 1 NW server.

If only 1 server:

  - if you could connect the lto4 library to your new server or snode then clone directly (to a new pool)

  - if not, then use a disk as buffer as described by Hrvoje

If 2 servers: As the new server does not know anything about the old tapes ...

  - you must first scan the tapes with the LTO4 library

  - then you need to ....

       - either clone or migrate/stage them to the new media

       - or migrate the save sets via disk (as described by Hrvoje)

The goal is to reduce space, what would you like reduced?

The size of the client file indexes?

The size of the media data base?

You do not want to put the information from the LTO-4s until needed for recovery, assuming it is not there now?

Which begs which tape has which save sets? A flat file representation of the media data bases on the LTO-4s could help with this by DRing on a test machine and running mminfo -avot and outputting to a file.
