But if I want to restore something that is in that saveset, I have to restore the whole saveset.

That's incorrect. You can use DDAR or DAR - check docs - and that will give you chance to restore individual files without restoring whole saveset. I believe you also need DIRECT to be set - unless mistaken this is described in admin guide.

I forgot to include a part of the daemon.log file. Here it is:

If I remember correctly NetApp will do snapshot of the data you wish to backup. Can you check ndmp side for log?

I want to do a file by file backup of the data stored on /vol/space1 which is configured as a NAS. The snap-technology of NETAPP takes backups of volumes i think not of files. I want to be able to restore individual files.

My Jukebox is connected to the Legato server; the NETAPP is on the same subnet and speaks NDMPM over the network with the Legato server. I want to use Legato to backup that part of the disk of the NETAPP.

I don't understand what you mean by check ndmp side for log ?

Well, you can restore individual file of course even if you do snap - that's not problem.

NW doesn't have agent running on NetApp, instead there is ndmpd service which has its own log. Can you check that log?

I have created a volume on my NETAPP called /vol/test/Qspace_TEST which is shared a as "test". I can do a "net use" from my PC to \\netappserver\test. I am now copying some dummy data to that share. ndmpd is running on my NETAPP ONTAP server and I have defined a NDMP Legato client on my Legato server. The Jukebox is not connected to the NETAPP and is not configured as a SCSI NDMP device but just as a SCI autodetected. Once the dummy data is copied, I will try to make a backup of the saveset /vol/test/Qspace_TEST. I think that this will work. But if I want to restore something that is in that saveset, I have to restore the whole saveset. If that works, I have already something. But whatt i am interested in is a way of backing up that space on NETAPP in a file by file way so i can restore files individually if asked for. I still don't see how to do.

The options set in my NDMP Legato client are:

DIRECT=y
HIST=y
UPDATE=y
UTF8=y

I am curious if I will be able to browse through the index to see the files in the /vol/test/Qspace_TEST. I let you know on monday.

The Networker dpcumentation concerning NDMP/DSA/DAR is very confusing... but it works.

Hi,

You are right. I am very impressed by the way how that type of a backup/restore works.

The backup is not a file by file backup but in the logfile it looks like a dumpfs backup in UNIX (using DAR). Using LTO3 tapes, i received 160Gb/h. And yes, Networker user can restore file by file.... Great !

Rgds,
Johan
