NAS backup : options

Hi ,

I am just trying to understand the options available for backing up our EMC  NAS ( VNX ) using networker 8.2.1

1. NDMP

I understand NDMP is the best way possible to backup huge NAS data ,however i am pretty confused as to

  • Can  NDMP backup can be done from a NAS  server to my networker server ( where the tape library is configured ) ?
  • With EMC NAS , which option is best for backup dump ,tar ,vbb ? any advnatage /disadvantges ?
  • if i mounted the NAS shares on linux server , is there some option in networker to do a journalling of all changes happening to the mounted drive and then incremental on it ?

2. NSM

  • How is the  new networker snapshot management( powersnap )  better than NDMP , since  NDMP also does snapshot for backup  purposes

Thanks

FireB0y,

Backing up VNX data using NDMP and  NetWorker can be done in 2 ways first is the native NDMP method where you attach the tape drive directly to the NAS filer (NDMP device) and the other is the DSA which allows you to backup NDMP data to a non NDMP device.

The different protocols supported for VNX is as displayed below.

Mounting a NFS share from the NAS filer to a LINUX machine is probably not recommended, but i should allow you to index the backups and create incremental backups. But I do not recommend this.

Please refer to the NetWorker admin guide for detailed information regarding NDMP backups.

Thanks crazyrov for the info .

I was trying NDMP DSA backup wherein the data follows to our networker server and then to our  tape drives  which are going as   Non-DAR Backup.

42910:nsrndmp_save: Performing Non-DAR Backup..

How do i enable DDAR for these types of NDMP backups

I believe DDAR backups will make  restores faster as tape data location sequential check is not required .

Also , any specific advantages of using NSM  for NAS backups ?

I have not worked with NSM backup with NAS.  We used NDMP backup for VG2 to DD thru 10G.

  • Can  NDMP backup can be done from a NAS  server to my networker server ( where the tape library is configured ) ?

Yes.  In that case, it will be DSA backup.  However, if you want to have NDMP backup data sending to sn, you should add "-P sn" to the backup command.  I think -P is not required for newer version of NetWorker but it will still work and force traffic to go to sn.

  • With EMC NAS , which option is best for backup dump ,tar ,vbb ? any advnatage /disadvantges ?

Normally I used dump.  Not sure if there is a difference in performance between dump and tar.  For vbb, be very careful with restore performance.  If you need granular recovery with vbb, my exp is very slow compared to dump in 7.6.x.  Not sure if this is changed in 8.x.

  • if i mounted the NAS shares on linux server , is there some option in networker to do a journalling of all changes happening to the mounted drive and then incremental on it ?

      Do not recommend this.

Can you let me know the command used and also the application parameters being used in your current configuration that is failing?
