NDMP only setup, where to backup bootstrap info.

Hi,

customer is going to a NDMP only environment and his new library is going to be connected to a NAS device.

We need a place to store the bootstrap info, what are the options:

1: buy a 1TB B2D license and backup network server to a B2D device.

2: reuse old library and connect to networker server.

But buying an extra 1-9 slot license or B2D license for only the networker server backup sounds a bit expensive.

Is it possible to deconfigure the library slots and just use the single drive without a license or is the minimum requirements for adding a drive to a networker server always a 1-9 slots library license.

Regards,

John

It is possible to connect a single drive to the server and backup the bootstrap to that drive.  Obviously you will need to change the tape over yourself!  The bootstrap has to go to a device local to the backup server but it does not need to be in a library or even need to be a tape drive as you can do this to disk.

Thanx,

so no license needed for single tape drive.

So NDMP stuff is going straight to new library attached to EMC Celerra, all licensed stuff.

Old library will be reused for bootstrap/index backup, no license needed as we use only the drive, not the library part.

When it's time to bring tapes offsite, customer should also take bootstrap/index tape out of drive together with NDMP tapes out of new library.

Unless the licensing model has changed in the latest version you do not need a license for a standalone drive, only for library and disk backups.

But do we need an extra license.

What I would like to do is connect the old library to the new backup server and only use the drive, so no library slots.

Is there a drive only license or comes that for free.

John,

For a standalone drive no license is required. So you would drop the old jukebox definition, leave the old device/s in place or recreate if you have already deleted.

Then you can either use the Library console or a combination of sjimm and mt commands to mount, unmount and move the tapes. All you need to do then is label the tapes into the right pool and go. sjirdtag can also tell you what volumes etc you have in the library available.

Some advice: -

1. Set AutoMedia Management on the tape so it will mount the tape automatically.

2. Sending only bootstraps to the tape means you have a single point of failure as it will take some time for this backup to fill a tape volume (unless your indexes are big also). So consider how often you change the tape or define 2 drives and clone from one to the other.
