NetWorker PowerSnap Service is stopping.

Hi Guys!

Few of the servers in my environment have  been experiencing backup job failures with below mention error logged in daemon  Files.

eldb11001.logon.elixia.com nsrpsd NSR notice Notifying Service Control Manager on Windows that NetWorker PowerSnap Service is stopping.

Even though fixing the error is pretty simple as we all know , I'm bit confused with why this is occurring on frequent basis. Is anybody having some good thoughts on this?

Thanks

Dinusha

Hi,

I think you are talking about a NW 8.1.x client install. The issue is that the nsrpsd service is started with the "startup type: automatic" instead of the "startup type: manual". However, it will end due to inactivity after 30 minutes.

Consequently, Windows will send you a warning about the missing service. If on Windows 2012, the server manager pops up when you login and it will indicate this event.

I have placed an RFE to register the the service with  "startup type: manual" but have not received any feedback yet.

Regards

Hello Dinusha

I don't think the backups are failing due to nsrpsd stopping, as bingo  said, nsrpsd is configured with start-up type automatic so, unless you are running NSM, nsrpsd is not required nor involved in the backup.

Have you tried to dig deeper to find out what is the cause of the backup failures?

Have you tried to change the start up type to manual and run the same operations?

Thank you,

Carlos

I had a similar problem in the past: power snap service stopped at a regular basis.

I paste an extract what I wrote to EMC support technician:

There was a file called "libpsvssclnt." in "C:\Program Files\EMC NetWorker\nsr\logs" folder that was not deleteable. I tried it with removing networker software, restart => nothing (Windows tells that this file isn't there anymore and cannot be deleted but still shows up in Windows explorer). But I could rename the logs-folder which I did. Installed Networker and NMM software again. "Networker PowerSnap Service" now does not stop any more on a regular basis. All backups that where done after this are recoverable.

Does this help? Do you have similar problems with this file?

MBhatti,

The NetWorker PowerSnap service is started on demand and will shut down after 30 minutes if it’s not required. From the errors you list below I don’t think your issue is related to this service?

It looks like a communication issue so check connectivity, name resolution and peer information/certificates etc. are all good between the client, NetWorker server and storage node 9and Data Domain if used within the environment).

William Mason,

Thank you for your comment, the Networker PowrSnap Service stopped automatically as you mentioned but never started automatically even after manually stated this service. the rest things as you mentioned is fine the connectivity, Storage Node DD etc.......

Note: Since the issue I post on the website on the same day I just did one changes like Networker PowerSnap Service select as manually started as before it was automatically selected so till today from NMC there is no error saw but will still monitor for few more days if there is anything will let you guys know ....

Thanks alot
