When you configure the tape library using NetWorker Management Console or with jbconfig, it will try to communicate to the tape library using the control port that use selected.  After communications have been established, NetWorker will ask the tape library how it is configured (e.g. number of slots and drives).   So if the tape library tells us it has 30 slots, then we will configure it with 30 slots.

You can find out what the tape library is telling us by running:

sjirjc  scsi@b.t.l

Where b.t.l is the bus, target and lun numbers of the tape library.

So, as long as the tape library tells us it has 30 slots or less, you can then use a 30 slot autochanger license.

No because, again, we get this number of slots from the tape library, and we verify that you have a large enough license based on that.

As a side note, if the tape library has 4 drives, you do not have to configure all the drives in NetWorker.

Thanks, Arun,

Quick followup question, however...  I've also noticed in some threads that some libraries may report all of their slots, regardless of the partitioning that's in effect.

Is it possible to tell Networker to just use the number of slots that are licensed, and override what the library is saying???

Hi Eric,

If the library shows up only 30 slots on the Networker console after configuring, then you need only 30 slot license.

Arun

Hi Eric,

It is not possible from the Networker side. It has to be done from the hardware side.

Hi Emerzock.

We have 2X Esl HP Libraries.

After the Hardware config is done through HP Command View. EMC Networker will only read what it has been assigned. We have the capacify of 512 slots but only allow Networker to 256. This is done through HP Command View and naturally flows on to Networker.

If your client has onyl allocated 30 slots and 1 drive then that's all networker will see.

If they plan on going up later then they will have to purchase another license. They should allocate all of the library to Network because it rocks and throw away anything else.
