From Avamar admin GUI select Policy Monitor and from there you will see % of new bytes for each snapup. As far as I have seen now, when using reports via EM you do not see it.

With NetWorker you can do that by using mminfo command and special switch which will list you that (dedupe or de-dupe or something like that I believe...).

I have already used mminfo to get details on the avamar save sets using the dedupe flag. The commands go

For the summary report;

mminfo -a -X -q dedupe

For the detailed report;

mminfo -a -S -q dedupe

However, it does not give me any sort of dedup ratio. I am looking at some sort of figure which will tell me how much data (in percentage or in ration) has be deduped.

For percentage you will need to calculate it from total size and new data which has been saved. But since that data in reality belongs to avamar server doing query there is much better choice.

Ok ... So I cannot get the data ready made from Networker. I suspected as much. Is it possible to get this data ready made from Avamar? If so, how? I haven't been able to find the info from any of the docs on Avamar or from my investigations using the Avamar reports. That may be a very basic question but this is the first time I am using Avamar, so please bear with me.

I could ... Unfortunately this requirement is from a client for whom I'm implementing avamar for. They want it ready-made.

I'm not sure about reports (I could check that tomorrow if my VPN will work), but I usually would look at activity log where you would see percentage. I didn't touch reports, but I would be surprised not to see that reported either. Nevertheless, why you can't use what get's reported with dedupe option?

Well, since NW is not doing dedupe ball could be easily moved away from NW playground into Avamar's and from there it would be much easier to get to that data.

I agree, but I am not sure how to do it.

Hey, thanks for the tip. I need to try this out at my client site. Give me a day or two. Will try it and get back to you.

Ok ... That worked though I still needed to do some amount of calculations :)

Hi Hari, you were actually able to determine how much data was on the source servers and how much data was written to the Avamar data store? Are you still using the NetWorker daemons to initiate the de-dupe backups? Or did you stop using NetWorker and start using the Avamar only agent?

Well ... I am still using NW to initiate the dedup backups. What I did was to use the backup management section of the Avamar console to determine the actual size of the backup on Avamar. I then took the actual size on disk and calculated the ratios that I needed.

Hmm... I was told that to use the Avamar management console I would have to register the clients within Avamar. But, I couldn't register the clients while using the nsravtar agent. I am now doubting that advice.

Did you only install the NetWorker packages on the clients?
