Query regarding restore using Networker Module for MS SQL

Hi All,

We have set up jobs to take backup of MS SQL and file system. When we try to restore file system using Networker User, we see the folders which have been backed up by NMC, which is absolutely fine. When we try to restore database using Networker Module for MS SQL, we see those databases which are backed by NMC, which is also fine. But when we start restore using Networker Module for MS SQL, it again backs up the database and using that backup it restores. We can see files created for that particular time in the respective folder. What we want to achieve is to restore the database using backup created by NMC. Is it possible? Can anybody provide inputs regarding this? Same thing does not happen when we restore file system.

Thanks for your inputs.

Thanks,

Shilpa

Is it whole database or just transaction log that get's backed up?  Check Restore a Database Backup which in first note explains why this happens.  As for what to restore, you control that via browsing mechanism.  In restore options you also see:

As you can see, by default action of backing up transaction logs is enabled there...

Backup.jpg

Hi Hrvoje,

When I do the backup I see that 4 files are created. When I do the restore I see that 2 files are created. The sizes of these 2 files are same as sizes of 2 files among 4 files created by backup. Could you please explain how I can be sure that only database or transaction logs are backed up when I do the restore? I see that ''Trasaction log backup before restoring Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and newer databases' option is selected. But this is what I see in 'Restore Status' window.

It says backup of database is succe

ded.

Also, when I do the backup of a different database, 4 files are created.

3999617102.0 - Backup of bam_documentum_bam database
3982839889.0 - Backup of bam_documentum_bam database
3966062682.0 - Backup of bam_documentum_bam database
3949285470.0 - Backup of bam_documentum_bam database

3932508351.0 - Restore of bam_documentum_bam database
3915731141.0 - Restore of bam_documentum_bam database

3898955005.0 - Backup of db_documentum database

3865400736.0 - Backup of db_documentum database
3848623525.0 - Backup of db_documentum database

3831847009.0 - Restore of db_documentum database
3815069953.0 - Restore of db_documentum database

The file of size 44,256 KB created during backup and recovery of bam_documentum_bam is created twice. If we assume that transaction logs are backed up during recovery also, then size of transaction log should be 44,256 KB.

But file of same size is not created during backup and recovery of db_documentum database. Also in our case db_documentum database is big. By looking at file size, it seems that database is getting backed up again.Because file of size 1,189,984 KB is created twice.

Any ideas on this?

Please let me know.

Thanks,

Shilpa

I see that backup request was pushed to full - are you sure DB is not SIMPLE mode?  To see what is backed up, use mminfo and nsrinfo to obtain data and not look at files.  With mminfo find nsavetime for your backup and feed it against nsrinfo for mssql namespace and you should get the data.  Also, you should see some more data from nsrsqlsv logs.
