SMB/CIFS data from NetApp

Hi all,

We have some CIFS volumes on a NetApp FSA2040 which we'd like to back up with Networker.  We don't currently have an NDMP license, so the going idea is to have Networker get the data via CIFS.  Our Networker servers are Linux, however.

So... Can Networker backup directly from a CIFS share?  If we do this, will they get all the right directory permissions and such?  (I'm thinking not, but hey I might be surprised.)

Alternatively, we could mount the CIFS volumes in a Windows host, and run the Networker/Windows client there.  If we do this, will Networker pick up the mapped drives?

Thanks!

Andrew

Yes, you can backup CIFS share though this is not recommended as usually you use those for user, group and profile data and as such CIFS backup will be somewhat slower and will have impact on box where share is mounted and being backed up from.  As for permissions, I'm not so surebut with CIFS it should work fine.  If you check some sources on NetApp site you will find that CIFS backup might dive CPU to the roof and they recommended NDMP for 3rd party backup applications.

@ble1 How is it possible to backup a NetApp CIFS share with NetWorker? I've been trying to get this working but have been unsuccessful. I wasn't sure it was possible.

CIFS share is always mounted by some user so if you do backup of CIFS on some box where this is mounted, you must also use that user.  Better way would be to do NDMP backup directly of NetApp.
