SQLWriter backup with NMM

Hi All,

I'm trying to get NMM to work with SQL 2005 but getting one specific error. My customers has several Windows 2003 runing MSSQL 2005 all of beside one work fine. I'm getting the following error:

52051:nsrsnap: Printing savecmd=nsrsnap_vss_save after parsing
APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter\DIAMSDB01VMDKSE

73064:nsrsnap_vss_save:Version information for C:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\bin\nsrsnap_vss_save.exe:

snapvss_quoow_save: Dumping disk quota databases into OS drive

Writer "APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter" has no components so has nothing to save.

63335:nsrsnap_vss_save:NMM backup failed to complete successfully.

Internal error.

nsrsnap_vss_save: APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter\DIAMSDB01VMDKSE: failed

When I type nsrsnap_vss_save -? on the client I can see correct out listing all databases. MSSQL is upgraded to latest version and I'm using the latest NMM module. I have even tried with NMM 2.3 since I'm on the beta testing program but with same error.

Anybody have any ideas??

Hi there,

Is this a cluster environment?

Could you please run the follownig command and attach the output?:

If stand alone client:

nsrsnap_vss_save -D5 -?

If cluster:

nsrsnap_vss_save -D5 -c client_name -?

Where client_name is the virtual name of the SQL cluster.

Usually this error message is related to name reolution issue or wrong configuration of cluster environments.

Can you please run the command "vssadmin list writers" and attach the output?

What is the results if you run the bakup setting the save set?:

APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter

Please let us know the results.

Thank you.

Best regards,

Carlos.

Hi again,

As per output, looks like some permissions issue so please do as follows:

1.- Ensure the user you are logged in the SQL server has the right permissions over the SQL DB's.

2.- Ensure SQL allows remote connections.

3,. Check authentication methods in Networker server and SQL server, to do it please run:

nsradmin -p nsrexec

nsradmin>print type: nsrla

Output should be something like this:

nsradmin> print type: nsrla
                        type: NSRLA;
                        name: machine_name;
NW instance info operations: ;
       NW instance info file: ;
          installed products: ;
                     version: "EMC NetWorker xxx ";
                     servers: ;
                auth methods: "0.0.0.0/0,oldauth";
           max auth attempts: x;
               administrator: Administrators,
                              "group=xxxxxx,host=xxxxxxx"
                 kernel arch: xxxxxx;
                machine type: server;
                          OS: xxxxxxx;
           NetWorker version: xxxxxxxxx;
              client OS type: xxxxx;
                        CPUs: x;
                     MB used: xxxxx;
                  IP address: xxxxxx

Check the line auth methods: "0.0.0.0/0,oldauth"; this should be the same in NW server and SQL server. I guess that you have in Networker server

auth methods: "0.0.0.0/0,oldauth";

And in SQL server:

auth methods: "0.0.0.0/0,nsrauth,oldauth";

Please change the authentication method in the SQL sever to match the one in the Networker server. To do it please run:

nsradmin>update auth methods: "0.0.0.0/0,oldauth"

update?y

nsradmin>quit

Also please stop Networker service on the client, delete the /nsr/tmp folder and start service again.

Also please provide the output of the "vssadmin list writers" output and also please the output of "vssadmin list providers"

Please let me know if that helps.

Thank you.

Carlos.

Hi again,

that looks good to me, however please install the following VSS patches:

KB940349 and KB936008 to avoid any VSS related issue.

At this stage I would suggest you to open a case to be handled by support, as there are some logs to look into, such as Application event logs and RMAgentps logs.

Please don't hesitate to request the new SR to bwe assigned to myself and I'll continue working with you.

Thank you.

Carlos.

ok, I will op up a SR on this and request it be signed to you.

I will be away on holiday but will be back in a week. I will open up the service request later today and append all the logs from the client and NW server so you will have something to look through.

best regards,

Thomas

I would suggest to disable nsrauth as I had an issue with NMM running it.  Also, once you open a support call, ask for updated NMM package - build reported by your logs indicate an older build (GA perhaps).

I'm afraid that disabling nsrauth is not an option. The customer likes to use the the feautures that needs nsrauth enable. Like browsing client and son on

I've taken ownership of this case and will follow up with you.

Thank you.
