Unable to backup Exchange 2010 database with NMM2.2SP1 and nsr_exchange2010.exe v1.1.132

Hello,

When I backup my Exchange server (first node with one active database of a two nodes DAG) at file level (C:, D:, E: and SYSTEM COMPONENT) all is working fine .... very long but it's a NMM "standard" behavior.

When I want to backup the Exchange 2010 mailbox database, it failed with the following message in tmp\sg :

:APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010: No full backups of this save set were found in the media database; performing a full backup

52051:nsrsnap: Printing savecmd=nsr_exchange2010.exe after parsing

52051:nsrsnap: Printing savecmd=nsrsnap_vss_save.exe after parsing

APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010

24.03.2011 16:11:14: Microsoft Exchange 2010 online backup for EMC NetWorker version 1.1.132.0

24.03.2011 16:11:14: Verbose: Verbose mode level 3 is enabled

24.03.2011 16:11:14: Error: Backup can only be started as part of configured savegroup

24.03.2011 16:11:14: Debug: Starting Cleanup

24.03.2011 16:11:14: Debug: Exiting with code: 1

APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010: Backup of [APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010] failed

The group used is of course a snap group with a snap policy

The client definition has the following settings :

save set : APPLICATIONS:\Microsoft Exchange 2010

backup command : nsr_exchange2010.exe -vvv

application information : empty but I also tried to set the value to NSR_SNAP_TYPE=vss

The boring *@ is added to the Networker Server admin list

I tried various settings on the backup command line (-vvv, -active, -nocheck, ...) I always receive this error.

I didn't receive any other message in any log file (\applogs, \logs). It even didn't start the snapshot process but the prob is successful.

vssadmin list writers has no error and, of course, the nsr_exchange2010.exe binairy is copied in the Networker \bin directory of the Exchange 2010 server and the Networker client is Networker Module for Microsoft Application 2.2SP1. My Networker Server is 7.6.1.2 (not yet tried the cumulative 7.6.1.4).

If anyone can help me what's wrong in the configuration, I will appreciate.

Thierry

Hi Thierry,

That solution will work with the regular NetWorker client - but not with NMM.  The doc you referenced has a few statements that are intended to indicate that.  Sorry it is not as clear as it could be.  Here's what it says:

A fully integrated Microsoft Exchange 2010 backup solution is currently being developed for the next major release of the NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications (NMM) software. This technical note outlines a solution that consists of a single new client binary that has been developed.

IMPORTANT: This client binary requires that the NetWorker client software be installed on the Microsoft Exchange 2010 system. When Microsoft Exchange 2010 support is offered in the next major release of the NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications (NMM) software, it is strongly recommended that this interim solution be immediately replaced with the new NMM solution.

If you want to use the "plug-in" solution, please use the regular NetWorker client software.  You can get more info from the NetWorker Procedure Generator as well (see here https://community.emc.com/message/500441 and https://community.emc.com/message/436677for some info and links).  If that doesn't work, then I think we have folks that can comment and help.

If you're willing to go w/ the new NMM, you'll be able to protect Exchange 2010 through it.  Assuming you have EMC Powerlink access, please visit the following link to see how:

(This is in this location)

Hope this helps,

Hi Thierry,

Thanks for the question and details.  I think the fundamental issue here is simply that NMM 2.2 SP1 does not support Exchange 2010.  This will be supported with NMM 2.3.  Timing wise your question comes to us on the day that this new release will be made first available.  Watch this space a bit later today and we will post some additional details on how you gain access to it and the documentation.  I think the docs and info on E2010 would clear up the issue (along w/ the supporting software of course).

For now, check out these different discussions going with details on this:

Thanks,

Eric

Hi,

EMC technical document ref 300-011-099 (https://powerlink.emc.com/nsepn/webapps/btg548664833igtcuup4826/km/live1/en_US/Offering_Technical/Technical_Documentation/300-011-099.pdf) states that Exchange 2010 and Exchange 2010 SP1 are supported with NMM 2.2 SP1 using a specific binary named nsr_exchange2010.exe (ftp.legato.com/pub/NetWorker/Updates/Exchange2010). This binary and technical notes are available until the full integrated NMM 2.3 will be released.

So, my backup are supposed to work but there is something wrong in my configuration.

Regards.

Hi,

You're right, I misunderstood the documentation. I just run a test with the standard 7.6.1 client (rather than the NMM2.2.1) + the special binary nsr_exchange2010 and the backup is correct.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Thierry
