Unable to configure SQL backup through NMSQL ?
Hi All,
We have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise database server with MS SQL 2008 R2 database where we have installed NW Storage Node 8.0.1 and also NMSQL 5.2 SP2.
When we try to create a client configuration through New Client Configuration Wizard and select SQL --> Target pool name, the next error message that i get is "Unable to connect to server".
We tried installing the SQL 2005 Backward Compatibility Components Feature pack on this DB server but still the same error occurs. We are able to configure Filesystem backup for this server but not SQL backup.
Kindly suggest some solution for this.
Pratik.

Don't use wizard - do it yourself.

Hi, why did you installed networker storage node on the sql server and not the networker user client?
Normally and in my opinion necessary, installed the networker 7.6.3 or higher and the networker modul for microsofft applications 2.3 or higher.
SQL Server needs to be backup using vss snapshots over sql server writer.
If you have installed that way you can open an command prompt and type nsrsnap_vss_save -?
Then you get the sql server instances incl. theire database as savesets like this.
"APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter" -means all sql instances and databases
"APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter\SQL Server%Instance" -means only seperate instance
"APPLICATIONS:\SqlServerWriter\SQL Server%instance\Database" -means only one database
Configuring the backup client:
nsrsnap_vass_save is your backup command for that backup client to configure it.
Application Information like this:
NSR_SNAP_TYPE=vss -means snapshot backup
NSR_ALT_PATH=C:\ -is the path where snapshots will be cached
The Backup Group needs to use snapshot backup active.
Please see the information for configuring the sql server client in NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications 2.4 Application Guide.pdf.
Here the link EMC® NetWorker Module for Microsoft Applications 2.4 Administration Guide
Edit:
I saw now that you using the old networker mdule for sql server.
Then the backup typ and save sets are diffrent.
Backup Command: nsrsqlsv
Savesets: MSSQL$Instance
No extended group parameters needs to be configure.
Good Luck.

Hi,
It was customer’s requirement to take SAN backup of the SQL DB server and so we had to install Storage Node and not the NW User client.
Also, customer has procured license of NMSQL and not NMM. Thus, we have to configure backup using NMSQL and not NMM.

Hi Pratik,
NMSQL is nor supported with NW 8.0.x, so you will need to install NMM.
If you want to run VDI backups, please install NMM 2.4 or NMM 2.4 SP1, as both support VDI based backups, as have part of the NMSQL code embedded on it.
@DaJu, as you can see not only VSS based backups are supported with NMM anymore, versions 2.4 and 2.4.1 (and all other future releases to come) do support SQL VDI backups.
You can use and install of course storage node software, and configure the SQL servers either as storage nodes or dedicated storage nodes however, if you are using Data Domain devices you can just enable DFA on the SQL servers.
As Pratik mentioned in the first post they are using NW 8.0.1, and this version of NW client supports both NMM 2.4 and NMM 2.4 SP1, so my advice would be to install NMM 2.4 SP1, and configure VDI based backups.
So Pratik, in closing, you need to install NMM and not NMSQL as it's not supported.
About Licensing, if I remember well the SQL licenses will be used by the NMM client, however is better if you contact EMC Licensing at licensing@emc.com
Thank you,
Carlos.

Hello holyboy1989,
If you are using Networker Version 8.0.1.1 build xxx then surely you will get this error. Please specify which networker version you are using for backup server and storage node. Please mention the complete version along which build.
