From the error message you're getting the VM cannot be snapshotted. Try to create the snapshot manually via vCenter.
If that works the backup may be running at a time where there is heavy load on the VM which is preventing a snapshot. You can also disable quiescing, but this will create inconsistent snapshots because the application cannot be quiesced.
