Using VM for Backup Server
Folks,
In an environement that has backup servers and storage nodes, can I use VM for backup server and physical servers as storage node since backup servers don't need much horse power? Will it work? Thoughts/Advice?Is this infrastrcuture supported by EMC?
Thanks in advance.

Lets just think this one through for a couple of mins...
You are considering using a VM guest as the NetWorker server and physical servers as Storage Nodes...
So far sounds OK. However, this means that in the event that you have some form of disaster in your VM environment which needs to be recovered - you are going to have to rebuild the VM host, then potentially the VM Guest which is your NetWorker server and then somehow recover NetWorker databases etc - which will mean configuring one of your storage nodes, then performing the recovery.. Do you really need all this activity ?
As for the support .. last time I looked the official line was (EMC Information Protection Software Compatibility Guide - Q207) -
NW client for Linux within a Service Console. Backup and recover of *.dsk files
NW client within a VM. Backup and recover of Windows and Linux file systems within a VM
NOTE: VMWare DOES NOT support any tape drives on a SAN. For details please refer to ESX documentation.
So this implies that you would be implementing an unsupported solution.
So whilst the idea may sound logical, I would be thinking more than twice about virtualising your NetWorker Server.
Hope this helps
