Basically, VSS is a Microsoft service that tracks the changes to any open files so that open files can be backed up during a backup operation. The advantage of course is to take backup of open files in Windows environment, something similar to Open File Manager. It does need some resources lime 15% free space on volume but they are basic points any server would have in any case.
