backing up an ISA server

Hello Guys,

does anybody have an idea why a MS ISA server backup does not start successfully? Even if i stop the whole service the backup does not start. I can run a backup from the client side without any problems (and even when the ISA service is running) and this is how i workaround it also. But the number of such server increases in my environment and i would like to have all the backups to run when initiated from the server.

Probe job had unrecoverable failure(s), please refer to daemon.raw for further details

40473 29/10/2008 8:06:56  2 0 0 7108 8184 0 backupserver savegrp command ' savefs -s backupserver.local -c isaserver.adroot.local -g "GROUP DAILY" -p -o VSS:*=off -l full -R -v -F "C:\\" "D:\\" "SYSTEM DB:\\" "SYSTEM STATE:\\" "SYSTEM FILES:\\"' for client isaserver.local exited with return code 1.
32496 29/10/2008 8:06:56  2 0 0 7108 8184 0 backupserver.local savegrp job (32156) host: isaserver.local savepoint: isaserver.local:Probe had SEVERE indication(s) at completion.

thanks for your help

Try -c -c isaserver.local instead of -c -c isaserver.adroot.local

Client is isaserver.adroot.local or isaserver.local? It seems as client name is isaserver.local, but -c is using something else. Is it attentional? Is it on alias list? Did you try client initiated backup? Have you check if RPC communication between client and server is ok?

Then is something more typical like communication issue in one way (firewall for example) or some naming (routing) issue.

Try running a manual backup from the server.

Check you client/Group configuration.

Check network connectivity; nslookup, ping...etc

look at the entries in your daemon.log

no not that is only my typo i just did not want to post original server names... the names of servers are correct. the problem is that the backup does not start automatically and i can run it only manually using the "save" command.

Have you check your network conectivity? DNS entry?..etc

What is defined in your Saveset?

ISA will have specific set of rules for network access from Internal, local external and permiter networks. What is showing in the ISA firewall logs when you try and run an external backup?
What rules and in what order are they on ISA?

once again i say: i can backup using the save command so everything is fine. the only difference to other servers is that there is MS ISA installed on it and probably location of that server is in DMZ.
the question is: what connection problem may i have if i can run the backup manually from the GUI and from command line but not automatically when initiated by the backup server.

You best check exactly where you server is located (not just assume).
If it is in a DMZ then check the ports on you firewall.

Check backup with the followings ports open on the firewall;
;
7937 - 7938 if not successfull then try

7937 - 9936 again try with

10001-30000.
