backup offsite storage

hi everyone,

i just want to know if there is a way that we can store the backup file from networker server to an offsite storage..the scenario goes like this, we have a networker server and data domain, we backup our database through the networker and data domain is the main storage..so now, we are going to have an offsite backup for longer duration.is that possible?

thanks,

randy

Yes, it is possible - you can:

- clone DD save set to external offsite storage (tape) and have one copy online and one copy offline (with longer retention) - I think you must adjust browse policy there

- stage DD save set to external offsite storage (tape) and adjust b/r policy

- my favorite, run separate job for jobs that has to be kept longer and have go directly to external offline storage (tape)

What exactly do you mean by disk drives?

In general, you can use any allowed directory and define it as backup device - no matter where it resides.

However, if you intend to swap the disk, NW does not really support that. In other words: he has no capability to support removable disks except for disk jukeboxes.

Of course you could disable an AFTD, remove the disks and store them offsite. For restores use the opposite procedure. But i do not recommend that. For this case i still recommend tapes.

disk drives/storage is somewhat like hard disk that provides random access storage.

how about adding an iSCSI from a NAS storage..is that possible?

We succeed in creating AFTD in iSCSI..our main purpose is that long time retention for the backup using disk drives and not tape drives.

ISCSI from a NAS to a OS is like a storage over TCP/IP (You really want to do this in your production !!). Remember that NetWorker cannot see any disk, tape or any device (except DD) unless it is configured on the OS. So, if you succeed in creating a logical partition on the OS and create an AFTD or FTD on the partition for NetWorker you are good to go.

If you already have a storage solution in place why aren' t you looking at replication ?

Or, what exactly is your requirement ?

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly you have on your mind as you say offsite storage.  If you attach disks or NAS this is not offsite storage in backup jargon. Having attached NAS (CIFS, NFS) or some other disk array (iSCSI, FC) would be business as usual for NetWorker.  If you are looking at keeping those on disks, then you might check archive tier with DD which is rather nice option to have and you could also take advantage of DD Boost.

You can do that if you changed paths to volume (AFTD path).  This, however, is not recommended and in case of trouble you will hardly get immediate support.

Sorry for confusing you crvelin, i got a successful restore after copying and paste of the backup file from networker server...here it goes, i created an iSCSI from a NAS storage and mount it to networker server for bigger space for the backup..after that, i created an AFTD from it..after successful backup(AFTD), i cut the AFTD folder and paste to another storage..after that from client database, i restore it and got successful restoration..that means that its possible to copy and paste the backup file from an AFTD device..hope you understand my point.
