backup speed over 100 mbps networker

Hi,

Can any body tell me, how to calculate the maximum bandwidth which I can get for backing up 300 GB database over 100 MBPS LAN?

6.5 MByte/s continuously troughput is good and realistic, peaks of 8 MByte/s are nice to have.

Anand,

Under ideal conditions a 100 Megabit LAN will transfer data at a rate of 10 Megabytes per second (I usually see less, like 9.2 MBs/sec). So a 300,000 MB database (300 GBs) will take 30,000 seconds or 8 1/3 hours (3,600 seconds in a hour).

You can reduce the time by compressing the data before it's sent over the LAN by using compressasm. I've reduce our backup times by a few hours by doing this.

Actually if you client can push it you will get 11MB/s without any problems (at least I see that with UNIX clients). That would give you 7.5 hours. However real question how would be how much can your client push.
