barcode word for volume name

Dear All,

We have implemented a TLU called Quantum i500 and it has a barcode reader.
I tried to label the volume, and volume name is 000023.

I have another TLU called scalar 24 and it also has a barcode reader.
I also labeled the volume, and its name is 000023L2.

Is possible that I can label the volume at Quantum i500 and volume is 000023L4?

Thanks for any input.

When you use barcode labels, NW uses the label code as volume name. If the bar code with label 000023L4 is used on a media in i500, the volume when labeled will get 000023L4 as label.

I would suggest to be careful. Your barcodes 000023 & 000023L2 are similar. I ad an issue where both libraries were with same set of barcodes and we had a volume in one library with a barcode and a volume in second library with same barcode. NW would allways get confused and pick none of them.

I had this problem a long time ago, but can't remember right now where the solution was. What I can say is that 000023L2 is the FULL barcode, but the first libray is returning only the first 6 characters. Probably I had to set something in the library itself, in the first one to get all chars, or in the second one, to not get the last two characters. Take a look at the library panel to see if there's any options for the barcode reader, I bet you'll find something there.

most of the backup software only able to label media with 6 alpha numeric e.g.

000023L2

in NetBackup/NW/Data Protector
it will either label as

i. 000023 or
ii. 0023L2

you need to configure from the library whether the barcode read from left to right or right to left. This normally require hw service account to do so which involve HW vendor.

Dear All,

I found the i500 user guide:

Media Barcode Format ¿ defaults to Standard. The available options are as follows:
¿ Standard Six ¿ Six character barcode number with or without a one or two-character media ID,
for example, "XXXXXXL4" or "XXXXXX". Only the six character barcode is reported to the host.
¿ Plus Six ¿ Six character barcode number followed by a media ID, for example, "XXXXXXL3".
Six character barcode and media ID are reported to the host.

I think this is the i500 configuration and I will try next Monday.

Best Regards,

If you are going to make both the library barcodes same, then you can have problem. Try and use a different sequence of barcodes for each library.
