configuration steps for DSA NDMP backup and EMC Celerra

Greetings all,

I am stuck trying to get DSA backups working for an EMC Celerra NS-120. I have a working Networker 7.4.5 infrastructure in this site, and the Windows and Unix clients are backing up OK to the storage node (single LTO-4 tape drive in a Quantum library). The Celerra is fairly new.

My question is: what do I need to do on the EMC Celerra to enable NDMP communication for DSA backups?

I have configured a client for the NDMP host, and am running this command:

nsrndmp_save -T dump -M -c NDMP_client_name_here -s NW_server_name_here -b "MEDIA POOL" /path_to_directory

I get:

Failed to connect to port 10000 at host 'NDMP_client_name_here' :No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.

The network ports are open, and I am using the root user to test the NW client, so I think that is not the issue. If I change the ndmp user name and pwd credentials in the NW client for NDMP to a known bogus password, I get different errors.

I opened a support ticket with EMC but so far the tech has only asked that I *disable* NDMP on the Celerra in order to get "LAN backups" to work. ?!?!?! This makes no sense to me. nsrndmp_save needs NDMP to work, right?

I have pored over the "NDMP for Celerra" docs and the NW docs for dsa backups, and the man pages for nsrndmp_save have been open and on my desk for a couple days just in case I can absorb the knowledge by osmosis but so far I am still spinning my wheels.

Any help or leads would be awesome - thanks in advance!

on Celerra issue "su" command and then run:

nas/sbin/server_user server_2 -add -md5 –passwd ndmp

Creating new user ndmp

User ID: 101

Group ID: 101

Home directory:

Changing password for user user_name

New passwd:

Retype new passwd:

Hi dynamox, thanks for asking - yes, I created a ndmp account on the Celerra - got the steps for this from the NDMP for Celerra doc. - G

Well that's embarassing! I can't telnet to 10000 from the NW server:

"Connecting To xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx...Could not open connection to the host, on port 10000: Connect failed"

Nothing in the server_log server_2 output near the time of the telnet attempt.

I will sort this out first and post the result soon.

Thanks again dynamox!

Meanwhile - I'm back to Admin School for "Networking 101"

can you telnet to port 10000 from your networker server? If you can you should get this weird console and might have to kill the command windows to get out. If you are unable to connect, can you look in “server_log server_2” output ..see if there is anything around the time you tried to telnet.

OK - progress! My errors were too:

1) I was trying to run NDMP to the control station IP and not the file share IP - so I changed this to the correct IP

2) I also had created a plain-text ndmp user on the Celerra - once I deleted this and re-created it as an md5 user, I no longer rec'd the port 10000 error or the "Not able to connect or authorize the client" error.

Now I have some other issues, but I am past these at least.

Thanks again dynamox!

BTW I still can't believe the EMC support tech's first idea was to disable NDMP on the Celerra...

The idea of disabling NDMP was right if you do not have NDMP agent license in your backup server. Also for NDMP either you have to connect your TLU

exclusively with Celerra or share it over SAN...only then NDMP would work. Disabling NDMp would allow you to backup cifs as a filesystem.

This is not correct information.  It has been some time since I did this with Networker but you can backup a Celerra over the network using NDMP.

Hi Dan,

I cannot login to emc community as I have only one user and that is powerlink user.

Could you please let me know how to backup CIFS share over LAN without NDMP. Do I have to disable NDMP?

If yes, how? I can neither connect TLU exclusively with Celerra nor I have a SAN environment. Please suggest.

Regards

Jai
