However if this is first time you run this backup, there are other possible (and perhaps most likely) candidates... so here is the check list:
1) make sure nsrauth is disabled (both server and media server and if error persists then client too... if disabling it now keep in mind that you must restart nsrexecd)
2) authetification could really be wrong one (like database credentials or system user not having proper access rights)
3) something I did hit... NMDA v1.2 with newer NW client against older server will give this error.. the only way forward is to update all ends to recent versions
