ipv6 support in NMM (Exchange 2010 DAG backup)?

Hello

When running the NMM Configchecker one of the reqs listed is that ipv6 should be disabled.

It is very unclear to me why this is a requirement.

We have customers who require that ipv6 must be enabled.

What can be done in those circumstances ?

Can we backup Exchange 2010 DAG with NMM when ipv6 is enabled ?

Thanks

Eivind

Hi Eivinda,

From the Exchange 2010 side ( without any backup application ) , it is supported IPv6 , Check this Microsoft article:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg144561.aspx

Regarding other backup solution, i dont have enough information on supportability for IPv6 with Exchange 2010 backups, But as i mentioned before, If you have dedicated network for backups, you have to disable the IPv6 on the network adapter (NIC), that is used for the backup and recovery operations.

Hope this helps you.

Hi Eivind,

NMM will not work properly if IPv6 is enabled, IPv6 issues affect browsing RSG mailboxes, There is a known issue with IPv6 affecting MAPI calls as NMM uses MAPI calls to browse RSG mailboxes. When IPv6 is enabled on the client, RSG mailbox browsing will fail. This can prevent you from viewing and selecting RSG mailboxes. This problem must be fixed through the registry, not the network connections dialog box.

So IPv6 enabled will lead to some issues where RDB item-level browsing is performed or for browsing RSG mailboxes.

You can disable IPv6 for the NetWorker adapter on which the backup operations are configured. For Exchange item level recovery, the registry must be disabled.

Hope this helps you.

Additionally , you can use the following Microsoft KB article to disable the IPv6 on your server:

Hello Ahmed

Thank you for the information.

Is the issues regarding IPv6 a NetWorker only issue, or does it affect all backup apps, including the built in functionality in Exchange 2010 itself ?

Is there any backup apps that do not use MAPI calls ?

It's important to properly identify the issues so that they can be explained correctly to my customers.

And so they won't think this is a NetWorker issue when it might not be.

Thank you
