networker versions

I am entering NetWorker world...

Have a question about versions...

In this doc Best practices on DELL EMC NetWorker 9.1, 9.2, & 18.1 VMware Integration (2149750)

there is a gap between 9.2 and 18.1

I read other sources but couldn't find any explanation about this gap in versions numeration.

Does it mean that under EMC it was up to 9.2 than under DELL it started from 18.1? Doubt... but...

In the configured (under DELL supervision) where I will start it's 18.4.

Thx.

of course it should be gAp, and not gUp

Hi @pob579 ! From what I know - EMC decided to change the versioning statergy to the year of release instead of continuing with its legacy versioning but soon realized that this created a lot of confusion between the users and there were major no releases being done every year. Thus now they are just continuing from where they left off.

Thank you very much crazyrov

If Dell people monitoring the forum could you please provide a definite answer on NetWorker version topic.

That was pretty much the definitive answer really...

There are no versions in between 9.x and 18.x due to the initial shift of going for a year-based approach but abandoning that along the way in 2020 when nw20 should have been released but never was...

So as an end result there is no version 10.x until 17.x and we are now at version 19.x in 2023, where the version number is no longer related to the year of release.

There was a KB article that stated the newer versioning scheme at the time: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000157936?lang=en

  • Historically, new NetWorker version changes have been to increment the major number (e.g 7.x.x.x to 8.x.x.x)  to indicate major features or enhancement to the product.
  • Starting in 2018, the NetWorker version will change to 18.x.x.x.
  • The first two digits of the version (18) indicate the 2 digit year of the release  (e.g .version 18 for year 2018).
  • The next digit indicates the release number. This means 18.1.x.x is the first release of NetWorker in 2018. The second release in 2018 would be numbered as 18.2.x.x, if released.
  • The third digit indicates a service pack, if released. This would have the format as 18.1.1.x. If there is no service pack then it would be 18.1.0.0.
  • The last digit indicates a cumulative hot fix number. So a first Cumulative HotFix to the first release in 2018 would be numbered as 18.1.0.1.

But I can't recall them stating officially abandoning the changed numbering scheme from 2020 onwards.
