2724, linking problems & ping timeouts
Hello,
We have been experiencing problems with a handful of DELL 2724 switches. We plug them into another hub or firewall device and they have a very difficult time auto-negotiating. In some cases they will fail to auto-negotiate and pings will continuously fail. Then we have to turn off both devices and power them on to get them to work.
In other cases, they will begin to ping right away, but then we will periodically see pings start timing out for a period of 1-10 seconds, then pings will resume.
We are experiencing this on two different networks. The first network has a NetScreen 5GT firewall plugged into the DELL Switch that is causing problems.
The second network has the DELL switch cascaded to another older 10/100 Ethernet switch.
In both cases, we have tried to force the port on the DELL switch that cascades to the other device and more often than not, when we force the port to anything other than 10Mbps half-duplex, the device will not link. In the case of the NetScreen 5GT, we have tried to force that interface to 100 full, 100 half and 10 full with a matching setting on the NetScreen 5GT with little to now success.
Any tips or ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Kevin

This reminds me of some other similar issues we had with some 10/100 devices not working with the DELL 2624 unmanaged gigabit switch. In particular we had a situation where we had to hook up a Cisco router to a 2724 instead of the 2624, because the Cisco router would not link with the DELL 2624.
I suspect the above is all related.
Can anyone confirm these are known issues? Is it a good idea to disable the 1000Mbps admin advertisement whenever using a 10/100 network device such as a switch/hub/firewall/router, etc.
Thank you again,
Kevin
