If you are using the correct terminal settings in Hyperterminal (9600, 8, None, 1, None), you should be able to connect to the console to make changes via the CLI.
If the serial port on the clients you are using was previously unused, you might try checking the BIOS to verify that the serial port is enabled. If the serial port was being used by another device (like a hotsync for a Palm device), you might need to disable those services and reboot the system to free the port.
If you have another null modem cable, try swapping with a known-good cable.
The slimmed-down version of Hyperterminal packaged with Windows has some known emulation problems. You might try downloading either Hyperterminal Private Edition or Tera Term.
I'll check the serial port in the BIOS altho I was able to modify the port setting from within Win/98. I don't believe either port was previously used. I've downloaded the TeraTerm software as suggested. Coincidentally, the TE program loaded on the W98 PC is a Hilgraeve product of one flavor or another, so I'll try TeraTerm.
I will drop the baud rate down too. I had been using 115200 per the manual for 33xx model switches. I'll go for speed after I connect successfully.
Also, I had asked y'all about the network slowdown problem created on this network after connecting a router running DHCP to the 3348. Over the weekend I configured ea PC to have static IPs. Performance returned to each Pc after the mod. The NICs were already set to AutoSense on the Optiplex's, matching the 3348 to your noting. So that brings me to CLI on the 3348 to turn off Spanning Tree.
One more question...is it absolutely necessary to power off/on the 3348 to initiate comm with the TE?
To clarify... the slimmed-down version of Hyperterminal packaged with Windows was written by Hilgraeve. However, it has emulation problems that are resolved by the Private Edition.
If you are trying to connect using the 115200 baud rate, this may be the reason you do not get a response. The baud rate must be set to the correct speed to connect to the switch. If the baud rate is set too low, you will typically get random ASCII characters instead of text. If the baud rate is set too high, you will typically get no response. FYI... the original documentation for the 3300 series switches had incorrect information. The default baud rate is 9600 not 115200. This was corrected in the online User's Guide.
Once the correct settings are used for the console, you should be able to simply hit to get a prompt from the CLI. The switch does not have to be rebooted to connect to the console.

Thanks for the comeback.
