-- Configuration Database locked by another application - try later --
Hi,
Recently I was trying to configure one Dell 6024F switch in our network (trying to change interface description and adding new vlans to database) and I got the following message:
-- Configuration Database locked by another application - try later --
What this mean?
Thanks

What version of FW are you running? This means that another application (web, snmp, or another telnet) is doing something that may cause the internal database to be locked. It used to lock whenever any major event happens but this was annoying so in a later version of the code we narrow it down to just the transaction. Try upgrading to the latest FW.

SW version 2.0.0.01 ( date 10-Apr-2005 time 08:28:21 )
Boot version 1.0.0.13 ( date 13-Aug-2003 time 15:28:31 )
HW version 00.01.64
Can I do something before upgrade the software cause is the only Dell 6024F doing that now and the first time that I got the problem?

That's the latest SW and it should have the fix I mention so maybe this is something else. So is this problem ongoing or is it just temporary? Because there are points in which the switch must lock the DB to prevent data corruption so I expect to see this message once in awhile but not continuously.
Also do a "show user" and see if you can see any session that you don't expect to see (session that are logged into the switch).

Username Protocol Location
--------------- ------------ -----------------------
xxxxxxxx Telnet 10.x.x.x
yyyyyyyy Telnet 10.x.x.x
Serial 0.0.0.0
But I'm the only one now telneting the switch. Why do I have 2 telnet sessions?

I asked around and the DB can still be locked when a copy is occuring, when the DB is being backed up or copied. The copy command can be initiated via SNMP or telnet or web. It maybe that somehow a copy started but is now stuck. I've never seen it lock completely before so I'm not sure what to do. Perhaps you can try resetting the switch during your maintenance period (maybe toward the end of the work day - it should only take a few minutes to come backup). In the meanwhile I'll see if anyone else here know how this could happen so we can find a permanent fix.

P.S. I just sent this question to the developers working on this switch. Hopefully we will get more info soon.

No, not yet. This particular development team is not local to Austin and it will take time for them to response. I have no answer for you at this time. I will post something as soon as they response to me. If you need further and immediate assistant you can also call Dell support or your account rep and they can help you further.
