Find IP address of computer connected to port

My patch panel is a mess I'm having difficulties troubleshooting a bad network connection at someone's desk.  The corresponding port on the patch panel is plugged into the switch and I get a green link light but the port is still down at the user desk.  Obviously the patch panel is running to another port on the office floor.  I would like to be able to see the ip of a device plugged into the switch's port.  Is this possible and if so how?

The switch does not keep track of the IP addresses of any of the clients connected. It uses the MAC addresses to forward traffic to the correct destination. The bridge address table keeps a list of the MAC addresses learned on each port.

Find the MAC address of the computer on the switch.  Log onto the router and do a "sh arp".  In the ARP table you will find the MAC address from the switch and it will show the corresponding IP address.

Hope this helps....
