Monitoring Internet Traffic on Power Connect 5224 using Etherpeek

Hi,

We have tried to monitor internet traffic through the Power Connect 5224 switch from a PC using Etherpeek but it is not receiving any packets. It only receives packets that the PC send/receive from the internet, for example, by browsing the net on the monitoring PC. We have read about the use of etherpeek on switches and it suggests to use the monitoring port which manufactures dedicate for monitoring traffic. Can someone please indicate to us which port it is on the switch, or alternatively, how to configure a port to be able to monitor the traffic through it. Thank you

Regards

The PowerConnect 5224 mirroring feature is capable of 1 session between a "Source" port and "Destination" port.   In addition, the chipset utilized in the 5224 only permits sessions between ports 1-12 or between ports 13-24.  Any other session configuration is prohibited.   There is no single port that is dedicated for mirroring.

To configure port mirroring on the PowerConnect 5224 -

From the webGUI Interface

System -> Ports -> Port Mirroring -> Designate a "Source Port" [trafffic you wish to monitor], a Type of session: "RX" for receive, "TX" for transmit, or both, and a "Destination Port" [where the monitored traffic will be replicated].

Once you have configured port mirroring, the session should be listed in the Sessions Table.

From the CLI Interface

prompt# configure

prompt(config)# interface eth 1/X [where "X" is the "Destination Port"]

prompt(config-if)# port monitor eth 1/Y [where "Y" is the "Source Port"]

prompt(config-if)# exit

prompt(config)# exit

prompt# show port monitor

Once you have configured port mirroring, the output from the "show port monitor" command should reflect the session configured.  Again, please keep in mind that only 1 session may be configured, mirroring will only establish between ports 1-12 or ports 13-24 when configured, and there is no dedicated port for mirroring.
