N1148 Switch setup - no connectivity

I just purchased a Dell N1148P-ON switch and am trying to connect via the USB-B console. Just get a black screen.   Baud first set to 115200, as instructed by the manual, then tries at 9600.   Keyboard set to VT100  8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.  I'm using Putty. Just get the black screen opening, but no communication or prompts back.      Suggestions?

Hi CampArctic,

Do you have another cable you can try? Are you using the cable it came with? Let us know if you have any other questions.

It only posted once. The cable is just a standard micro USB cable. Is the system LED green?

I apologize if this shows up a second time, I'm not sure if it went through the first.   I am using the cable that came with the switch (just opened the box two days ago).  I do not have another cable to use (assuming it's special to Dell networking equipment).   Upon powering up, the 24 POE ports light up on the inside, but then the switch goes quiet.  I cannot log in, I cannot connect via fiber or via copper.  When I connect an SPF on each switch (old and new) and connect via a fiber pact cable, I do get a green link light on the existing server end, but not on the new switch.

I left the manual at home as I was re-reading it last night, but the top four lights on the far left are all green.

Hello,

I don't have much experience with the USB console connection, but I can say that the ones I have used have needed a driver installed on the laptop to properly use the device. Do you know if any sort of driver was loaded?

There was not. I guess I would have expected a link for a driver included in the documentation.

***Update***  I am now able to connect to the switch console, after updating the USB cable driver.  I can connect the existing switch to this new switch with a cat 5 cable (into port 1 of the new switch).  I can plug a laptop into the new switch an connect to the network (did a IPCONFIG /release, then /renew to ensure I could get an IP.    The issue is, while I can see the switch recognize SFP when I plug in it, I still do not get a link light when patching the fiber cable.  I do see a link light on the existing switch.  I have multimode fiber /SFPs, not single mode.

I'm sure I'm just one step away.  Do the fiber ports have to be turned on via the console to work?

I believe that they do, yes. I didn't see your firmware version in the thread, but if you check the link, you should get some resources for CLI to either raise the port, or just view it's current state.
