PowerConnect 3324 stop working

Hi,

We have 3 Dell switches. 2 is 3248 model, and 1 is 3348 model. Just recently, the 2 3324 models are not functioning properly. All the connections from the 3248 are not working. It seems like the power cycling the switches fix the problem. But it just happens more frequently. Then I check the log file from our firewall, it shows

5 04/20/2006 09:21:10.672 Malformed or unhandled IP packet dropped 192.168.6.220, 0, LAN 224.0.0.1 IP Protocol 2
Does anyone know what this means? Does this mean there's something wrong with switches?

Thanks.

Hi Eleanor

Could you tell me what version of firmware your switches are running? Does the entry in the log file appear approximately the same time that you lose connectivity on your 3248? Is there any error in the switch log?

Hi Adam,

3248's firmware version is 1.0.1.7

3348's firmware version(software version) is 1.1.0.42

There are no entry in the log file in 3248.

I don't know is this because we recently upgrade our firewall to Sonicwall. We didn't configure anything special with the switches, except assign IP address to it. Everything is still in its default settings. Is there anything we have to do?

Thanks,
EC

Hi

I would suggest upgrading the firmware on your switches to the latest version, see below links.

PC3248 Version 2.1.0.0

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R99940&SystemID=
PWC_3248&os=NAA&osl=en&deviceid=2625&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=3&formatcnt=2&libid=31&fileid=129286

PC3348 Version 1.2.1.3

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=
PWC_3348&os=NAA&osl=en&deviceid=4629&typecnt=1&libid=31&releaseid=R122261&vercnt=7

I am not sure if the message in your firewall log is related to the problems your are experiencing on your switches. The firewall thinks the packet destined for multicast addresss 224.0.0.1 is malformed, or it does not undertstand how to interpret the packet. Is the source address of this packet one of the PowerConnect switches?

In the mean time try upgrading the firmware on your switches to see if this helps the stability issue.
