Poweredge M1000e

Hi,

I'm having some issues with a setup I've inherited on an M1000e, basically I can't get management access to the thing!

I can get at the config on console without issue and can see that the IP address  I should be able to access it via is assigned to the management0/0 interface. This is showing as up/up on the CLI, so I'd expect to be able to ping it from devices in the same subnet, however I can't!

I'm pretty sure, (as in 99%) that the issue doesn't lie with the M1000e or its config. I used to have access until a switch that was connected into it died - I ended up rebuilding the config from scratch onto a replacement switch so there's likely an error there. However in trying to diagnose and resolve the issue I realised I can't even find the physical port that the management interface is associated with. Obviously with the old switch being dead any labels that may have been on the interfaces are gone etc.

Judicious google searching led me to this config guide https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Shared-Content_data-Sheets_Documents/ar/dz/ESG-PowerEdge-M1000e-Configuration-Guide-Aug-11.pdf but I see no mention of a management port, only the CMC? Is the CMC related to the switch management, does it pass it though? (if it does something really odd is going on as I can access that webpage fine on an IP on exactly the same subnet as the management0/0 interface IP - no login details for it mind you...!)P

Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Rich

The switches that are in the rear of the M1000e do not have a physical external management port.  They are accessed via the CMC.  The CMC (2 of them on the rear of the M1000e) will be connected to your management network.  The mgmt IPs of the IO modules (switches) would usually be on the same subnet as the CMC IP addresses.  One thing I do sometimes is SSH to the CMC, then if you issue "connect switch-X" where X is 1-6, you will get a console on the switches.  If you have IP connectivity to the CMC, and the switch mgmt IP is set to an IP in the same subnet, I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to ssh to the switch.  Let me know if I'm missing your question.

Perfect, thanks that's exactly what I was trying to get at.

Had no idea you could SSH to the CMC and then connect to the switch module from there. Unfortunately whilst I've tried that I've no idea of the username/password. I tried the default Dell combo of root/calvin with no luck, bugger!

Appreciate the help!

Ah okay.  If you have a console cable you may be able to connect to the CMC that way and somehow reset the password.  I'm sure there is a procedure available somewhere in the docs.
