I have been researching similar issues except with the SFP SX transceiver.
If I understand everything correctly, the SX receivers need MMF (multi-mode). The LX receivers by default use SMF (single-mode). The LX receives will work with MMF if you have a mode conditioning patchcord (MCP),
I couldn't find much on DELL's user guides regarding this. This is straight from the Extreme Layer3 Switch user guide:
Ensure that you are using multi-mode fiber (MMF) when using a 1000BASE-SX GBIC, and single mode fiber (SMF) when using a 1000BASE-LX GBIC. 1000BASE-SX does not work with SMF. 1000BASE-LX works with MMF, but requires the use of a mode conditioning patchcord (MCP).
I found information on Cisco's site and on Cables To Go that seemed to verify the above information.
Anyone can feel free to clarify any errors I may have stated.
