SFP+ transceiver distance relevance

Question

Does anyone can explain me the relevance of the distance for a SFP transceiver? with an easy example. Example: I have an N3048 switch on one side (A) and N3048 switch in my DC (B). Distance between both location is about 29miles. What distance matters for connecting A to B...is it to the DC or the 1st Backbone of the connectivity provider? The current transceiver in place is an SFP-10G-LR with a up to 6.2 miles distance. Thanks.
