SNTP on PowerConnect 5524 won't synchronize time.
Hi there,
I'd like to get some help on getting SNTP to work on Dell PowerConnect 5524. It seems to be simple to set up, but it doesn't really work. I can ping the NTP server but the clock remains unsynchronized for some reason. I've scrolled the forums on and on and there seems to be a solution by adding a specific security management permit rule as switch will drop the SNTP traffic if that rule isn't there. I added the rule but time remains unsynced. Can anyone show me a proper way of doing this? I'm running the latest firmware:
dellsw-5524# show bootvar
Unit Image Filename Version Date Status
---- ----- --------- --------- --------------------- -----------
1 1 image-1 4.0.1.11 16-Oct-2011 18:10:50 Not active
1 2 image-2 4.1.0.24 01-Sep-2020 14:40:38 Active*
"*" designates that the image was selected for the next boot

dellsw-5524# sh sntp configuration

Hi, actually I'd expect it to get the time from an SNTP, I'm not sure what causes this issue. You can have a look at Time Synchronization pg162-187 just in case you missed something. https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/common/powerconnect-5500-series_ug_en-us.pdf It shows Webgui and commands.
Hope this will helps!

Hi there,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, as I always forget to mention, before coming up with a question regarding anything, I try as much as I can myself first, and then if I feel like I'm really stuck, I ask a question. So yes, I've been through the manual. There is nothing that I missed. But as I mentioned before, I had come across posts where people encountered same problem where clock wouldn't sync. Now for me, I don't know exactly why, but as soon as I put NTP server in my local network it synced right away. After that I reconfigured sntp to point at pool.ntp.org and it kept working, like I could see switch polling time every 60 seconds no problem. I returned it back to local ntp server, as I'd like to keep my doors shut. So I'm not sure what caused this. But my clock is synced now.
