Activating Ethernet Card in Dell Latitude C800 Laptop
I have a Dell Latitude C800 running Windows XP home.
I'm trying to hook up to the internet using ethernet.
I plug the ethernet cable into the port, but there doesn't seem to be a signal. No light, no signal.
How do I tell if I have an ethernet card and that it's active?
I looked in Network Connections and only see my wireless connection, which is working. And an Internet Connection under Internet Gateway. And a 1394 connection.
I checked device manager and couldn't find a 10/100 card. I see the wireless USB card and the 1394 adapter
Is there a switch to flip?
Something else I need to do?
Thanks!

KW209,
The 1394 is NOT a wireless adapter. Try running Finding System Information unless you have XP. It will tell you at the bottom all your network adapters.

Hi -
Yes, 1394 is Firewire.
I have XP.
Thanks though for responding.

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>
Apparently, it is an either / or situation. The options were a modem or a NIC or a modem + NIC or a wireless NIC. The C800 I had had a modem+NIC.
If you want Ethernet on the C800, just buy a used Ethernet PCMCIA card on eBay. Lots of them to be found for less than $15.

No, not really. I have bought various used ones on eBay, and they all work fine. The really older ones have a dongle. I prefer the ones without a dongle that has the big plastic end with direct connection of RJ45 cable like http://cgi.ebay.com/10-100M-PCMCIA-Ethernet-network-LAN-Card-RJ45-RJ-45-/220741686342?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item33653ad446
however the bigger plastic end means you can only use one PCMCIA card at a time
the ones with the dongle lets you use two; for example, you might want to have USB 2 functionality; as I recall the Latitude C800 USB ports are USB 1.1
