Can ping DSL modem but can't connect to modem setup
I have 2 PCs
1. Dell Inpiron 2650 that connects to the internet great so I know that cables, modem and ISP seems to be working
2. Dell Dimension 8100 that can ping the Earthlink Netopia DSL Modem but
can't access modem setup page at
http://172.16.0.254/setup.html and therefore, doesn't seem to be able to access the net.
I've tried (almost) everything. Spent hours on the phone with Dell, Linksys (network card manufacturer) and Earthlink. Everybody seems to be pointing fingers at the other guys.
I can ping the network card (I think) at 127.0.0.1 and the DSL modem at 172.16.0.254 but that's all. My browser (tried both IE and Firefox) gets a page not found.
I've even reloaded the winsock files according to Microsoft article 241344 on "Error message: The page cannot be displayed" but I haven't had the nerve (and didn't understand the instructions) related to exporting and deleting the WinSock2 registry keys that are localed in 8 different directories.
My 8100 was working well about 3 weeks ago and I can't find anything I might have done to change the situation. I tried to restore the system to a previous check point but can't find any previous ones although I know there are at least 6 within the last two months. (That might be a clue.)
I'm tearing my hair (what little I have left) out. Any suggestion are despirately appreciated. I'd hate to spend hundreds on Geeks on Call when they might just flounder around as much as Dell, Earthlink and Linksys.

Thanks very much for the rapid reply and suggestion. Unfortunately, my 8100 can with Windows ME (Miserable Edition) so it looks like I shouldn't run this XP version. have any other suggestions?

Whooppee!!! Magic time. ispfix did the trick and I only had to tweak a few network and browser settings and I was back in business. Now, if I can just get my router working......
I really appreciate your assistance as you solved the problem that baffled those three big mentioned above for about 4 weeks. Guess that shows you that their techical assistance really s u ck s (since the Dell anti-bad language filter won't let me use that word without the spaces). The folks on the phone seem to try hard and have a good deal of patience but whoever is managing and giving them guidance doesn't seem to have much imagination.
