Choice of Wireless router

I am new to the wireless networking environment and have a few questions.  I have a new Latitude D600 with Dell Tru Mobile 1300 card.  I am considering several wireless routers. These are Netgear WGT624 108 mps; Netgear WGR614; Linksys WRT54G; D-Link DI-624 Air Plus Extreme G Router. My questions:

Has anyone had experience with any of these from an ease of use as well as how well they work from a distance from router perspective?

How important is the latest 108 mps spec?  If I can get a 108 mps for $20 more than a 54, would this be a good bang for the buck?

Thanks

The WGT624 is the best choice, mostly because of its power output...all the other routers in your list except maybe the Dlink are approx 30mW output...the Netgear is 100mW, and it what I currently own and use.

The 108MBit spec is only going to work with other Atheros chipset cards, but its is nice..I get about 70-80MBit through mine.

From a router standpoint, its a very simple router, but supports all the stuff you would really need like port forwarding, triggering, PPTP/IPSec pasthru.

Its definitly my choice at the moment.

How much download speed is your ISP going to supply?  Why pay for a router capapble of delivering 108Mbps when your download speed is probably no more than 5 Mbps?  Unless you have a lot on internal files to share across the LAN, go with the 802.11g or 802.11b models.  Save the cash for some extra RAM.

go to pcmag.com and search for wireless router. they have plenty comparion reports. my cable connection max out at 1.5 mb. IMO for internet and file download a wireless B router / adaptor set (rated at 11 mb) costing less than $40 (while on sale) is more than enough. Avoid the Dell adaptors and routers. That will save you endless hours of frustration.

BTW I use linksys WRT54G with a $13 gigabit USB wireless adaptor and a dell tm1400. the cheap USB wirless adaptor and the linksys router are rock solid. the Dell adaptor goes up and down all day. Sometimes, it takes a reboot to get the Dell wireless adaptor back online. I tried the Dell 2300 router. Returned it in 3 days. nuff said.

Good luck!
