Constantly need to "reset wireless network adapter"

Setup:

Ethernet from modem to router then:

Ethernet from router to Desktop

Ethernet from router to Ooma (Phone)

Ethernet from router to Sonos Controller

About 1/2 a year ago, I would typically lose my wireless internet connection once or twice every hour I was using my laptop.  I kept having to "Reset Wireless Adapter".  A housemate using a different Dell laptop (don't know which model) did not have any problems with dropouts.  I lived with the issue b/c I mainly use my desktop.  Now, my desktop is having the same problem.

How do I fix this "problem"?  I work from home and I can't have my connection dropping out all of the time.

TIA!

Two things that have helped wifi dropouts (in Win 10):

1. Go to the Wireless adaptor in Device Manager and defeat the "n" mode in Advanced Settings.

2. Change the address for the DNS server from automatic to that of an open server. The usual open address is: 208.67.222.222 primary and 208.67.220.220 secondary.

One thing I found after Upgrading to Win 10 is that in the Wi-Fi Adapter Advanced Settings, there's a Default setting to turn off the Wireless Adapter for power saving - I unchecked it and haven't seen the Issue again.

I have the same problem, except often the wireless adapter won't reset, and only solution is to reboot. Worked with Dell telephone technical support, and:  checked that I have the most recent drivers;  uninstalled and then reinstalled the wireless adapter.  Did not solve problem.  Dell thought that something had gotten corrupted, and had me restore computer to original factory settings (requiring reinstallation of all software).  After 7days, the problem started happening again.

An identical system, bought at the same time, has not had this problem.

Thanks for the reply...sorry to hear about having to reset and re-install.

I might have found a partial solution, at least for my desktop, which I use 90%+ of the time.

Two days ago, I disabled my wireless connection in my network settings.  Since then, I have not had issues.  Per my original post, I have an ethernet cable from my router directly to my computer, so I don't need wireless connectivity for my desktop.  I haven't tried my laptop yet to see if disabling wifi-on the desktop resolves the issue on my laptop (e.g., interference?).

Yes, if one connects with an ethernet cable, then failure of the wireless adapter does not prevent internet access.  However, I need to use this laptop in locations where ethernet is not available.
After reviewing suggestions in other threads about the wireless adapter needing to be reset constantly, I tried these procedures, which did not solve the problem:  disable bluetooth, move laptop right next to the wireless router, uninstall and reinstall the wireless adapter.  Checking for updated driver indicates that I have the most recent one available.

If you're connected to a hotspot or domain network, contact the network administrator. Otherwise: 1. Unplug or turn off the device. 2. After all the lights on the device are off, wait at least 10 seconds. 3. Turn the device back on or plug it back into the power outlet. To restart a router or access point that has a built-in battery, press and quickly release the Reset button.

This just started for me today, but far more than once or twice an hour, like every 15 minutes.  Then I have to reconnect, it troubleshoots and resets the network adapter.  What the heck Dell?  Has anyone ever addressed this?

I have had this problem on several Dell laptops.  Spent a lot of time with Dell technical support checking the drivers, uninstalling & reinstalling the adapter, with no success.  The simple solution was that I bought a USB wireless adapter from Radio Shack for about $30.  Should not be necessary, but this solution works.

Brand new 5548 just received from Dell.

Same problem for me - and especially every time the thing wakes up, it can't connect.

Windows Troubleshooter resets the adapter, and then it works for a while, but this is EXTREMELY ANNOYING.

Dell???

I'm having the same problem since I upgraded to Windows 10. Never happened on Win 7.

It does not happen as often as other above, but it's just as annoying.

Is it the Broadcom adapter or the Netgear hub?

Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've been having trouble with the wifi connection dropping out at irregular intervals since installing Windows 10. Please can you clarify what you mean by "defeat the "n" mode in Advance Settings" and explain how to find the DNS server address that you suggest changing from automatic to that of an open server?

Thanks in anticipation.

1) If you have an agn wireless card, then if you go to the Properties of the Wireless adaptor in the  Network Section of the Device Manager and click on the Advanced Tab. There should be a reference to the "n" function of the adaptor, such as "Adhoc 1n". It may be referenced differently, depending on the brand of wireless card. Just change the setting to "Disabled".

2) To change the DNS Server Address, start by right clicking the Wireless icon in the Notification area of the Task and selecting "Network and Sharing Center. On the left side of the next page, select "Change Adaptor Settings and double click " WiFi Settings on the next page. In the WiFi Status box that comes up, click on Properties in the lower left corner. The next box is WiFi Properties. Look for "Internet Protocol Version 4". Double click on the name; do not click on the checkbox. In the next box, click the open circle at the bottom for "Use the following DNS Server Address". Then enter the two addresses for the Preferred and Alternate Servers: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. If you click on the Advanced selection and then on the DNS tab on the following box, you should see the two addresses in the Sever Address box. Then click OK and on the other boxes as they appear. If you do not understand this, then please DO NOT try to make the changes and find someone that does to try this.

Both of these fixes have worked for me on several different computers using both Win 8 and 10.

KIRKD -- on the disabling "n", what the *** is the point in Dell selling n adapters if they don't work? That means that the WIFI speed will go down to G. So this "may" solve the problem, but creates a new one - that there is no point in buying this hardware in the first place. So while I appreciate your answer for people that don't know any better, I do know better, and this whole thing now turns into a scam. Dell sells "top-of-the-line" laptops with N WIFI, and after you pay that extra money for a new system and upgrades, you now have go go back to G speeds. And there is a big difference in G vs N, especially when streaming, and especially when you buy matching firewalls. This is not cool at all.

The wireless card is NOT manufactured by Dell, and no one can predict when a piece of hardware will be incompatible with a future Operating System.

You can always purchase a new USB modem. You should check to see if disabling n function helps.

I used this fix for my  M1530 successfully with Win 10, and saw no degradation in video streaming performance.

I wasn't talking about a future OS. I bought a stock Dell system and I was just connection-less! I just booted up the machine and ran into nothing but problems. I give credit to Dell Tech Support guy that spent as much time as he did for trying to address the issue, but upgrading *everything* on the machine including BIOS ain't the fix. The laptop that was shipped to me had drivers so old that even the Dell Tech Support people appeared baffled. This was a system not functioning on-arrival!

Again, there you go with buying other stuff (like the new USB modem) to get around the bad laptop hardware/software configuration. I tested this *** with 5+ different firewalls, from consumer to business grade, and I tested 20+ connected clients. I can back my statements.

As for you fixing this by degrading from N to G the difference is huge, and it does not change my initial point of why is Dell selling n cards if the solution is to degrade to G. It remains a rip-off, and it seems that people like you don't have a problem with this, but I do. And your answer is the same as the one given by Dell, and also other providers I dealt with, like NETGEAR. It does not change the fact.

What are you anyway, a Dell lover? Don't just protect Dell because you like it for some who-knows-reason. I usually don't go out of my way to yap like I am doing in this thread, but enough is enough, especially when I may buy a $900 laptop from Dell, but then I am down for days waiting for Tech support to finally get back to me (and then not calling back anymore), and hours of my time. Multiply that time the number of people getting screwed by this?

Tell you what, I'm testing with Dell, HP, Asus, and IBuyPower. I don't have any affiliation nor special appreciation for any of them, but right now Asus is doing the best job for problems like this one.

Hi

I bought a DELL Inspiron 3148 a few days ago. It's now upgraded to Windows 10.

I have a similar problem with my WiFi (Broadcom 1708 WiFi/BT combo chip). It needs constant resetting.

To date I've:
1) installed the latest WiFi driver from the DELL support site.
2) change the WiFi driver Advanced settings:
    a) AP Compatibility Mode to "Broader Compatibility", as suggested by DELL on their support homepage.
    b) Minimum Power Consumption to "Disabled", as suggested by DELL on their support homepage.
3) installed the latest BT driver

None of the above have helped.

I have just tried to find where to change "n" to "g" but it's not clear which setting that is in the Advance Setting. Any pointers are welcomed.

Many Thanks,
Alan
