Dell Studio XPS 1340 Windows 8.1 Bluetooth (Dell Wireless 1515) driver problem
Hi all,
I was having quite a hard time installing Windows 8.1 RTM on my laptop. I was getting BSOD after first restart. The issue is now resolved, thanks to guys over at eightforums. The thread with the info is here. This problem is now resolved, the problem was Bluetooth device/driver. When I disabled Bluetooth in BIOS installation was successful.
But I am unable to use Bluetooth. As mentioned in the other thread, here.
I tried following: Downloaded latest driver for Dell Wireless 1515 (Network_Application_C71DK_WN_12.0_A02.EXE) as mentioned in some other thread here. With Bluetooth disabled I cannot install it as installation requires Bluetooth to be enabled.
When I enable Bluetooth in BIOS Windows 8.1 will not start, ending up with BSOD, the same as seen during failed installations.
From C:\Windows\Minidump I found out that the problem is with athwnx.sys.
I also downloaded the latest driver from Atheros (win8-10.0.0.251-whql.zip). But there is no athwnx.sys file. Only athw8x.sys. So I overwritten C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\athwnx.sys with athw8x.sys.
And I am able to boot with Bluetooth enabled. And it works so I can e.g. pair my phone with the laptop.
But there is a problem: Wifi does not work now!
So far I did not find the way to get both Bluetooth + Wifi. I can either use Wifi with Bluetooth disabled or Bluetooth but without Wifi.
I am guessing it is just matter of finding the correct driver which would work for both Wifi and Bluetooth?
Any help with this is appreciated! Thanks.

himi420,
Bluetooth has been an issue with Windows 8.1. Since Windows 8.1 is not officially released as an operating system and is still in the beta stage. there are no official drivers for adapters. I have tried Windows 8.1 on a system and the wireless adapter worked great, but bluetooth would not pair and/or send files from one computer to the other.
Some drivers will install in the Vista or Windows 7 Compatibility mode
Disabling Bluetooth and waiting to see if Dell releases drivers for Windows 8.1 in October, I would try waiting to see what is available.

Thanks for your reply. Do you expect Dell to release any new drivers in October?
Btw I was able to use Bluetooth with drivers I installed and mentioned above. I was even able to pair my phone with the laptop. I did not test further but I assume all would work just fine. But as also mentioned when BT is working then Wifi is not. And when BT is disabled Wifi uses Microsoft driver, not Atheros nor Dell.

himi420,
I tried Windows 8.1 Preview on 2 different computer, different adapters and on one system, I could send a file from the Windows 8.1 computer, but could not receive from another computer. I also could not pair correctly. Was seeing the other computer appear, then disappear from the list found on the Windows 8.1 machine.
I would wait for drivers to see if they get corrected. Drivers, I am just guessing from past operating systems, may be late October, or maybe into November. Once Windows 8.1 becomes official, you may be able to get drivers by searching for the Hardware ID in the device manager

himi420,
That sounds GREAT!
Did you try sending a file from the computer to another device? Did it work?

Yes, as already mentioned in the linked thread i tested both pairing and file transfers with a phone and other computer. It works flawlessly. And I am now using my Bluetooth mouse again :-)
