Dell TrueMobile Wireless card incompatible with WPA, how to update driver?

Jump to solution

Back in 2003, I purchased Dell laptop and I also purchased Dell TrueMobile 1150 Series Wireless LAN Card. I am able to connect wireless to Westell Router Model 7500 using WEP and MAC address filtering. However, I have failed to connect wirelessly using WPA2 because I get an error stating that my wireless network adapter doesn't support WPA.

I am having great difficulty in installing the appropriate driver. When I googled for the appropriate driver, I got the following dell website:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&releaseid=R69901&SystemID=LAT_PNT_P4_C840&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2574&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=2&catid=&impid=&formatcnt=1&libid=0&typeid=-1&dateid=-1&formatid=-1&fileid=90953

However, every time I hit "download" it downloads the Dell Driver Download Manager. And every time I open the Dell Driver Download Manager, a message pops up saying, "There are no files to download. Please go to Drivers and Downloads to select file(s)." When I press "OK", the Dell Driver Download Manager closes.

Please advise.

Edit:   Please disregard what is below the line.  You have one of the few cards that does not use broadcom drivers.  A working link for the drivers you referenced is:

ftp.us.dell.com/network/R69901.exe

These look like rebranded agere drivers.  They will get you WPA support.  I doubt the hardware can handle it, but you may be able to google for more recent Agere drivers that offer WPA2 support.

Lastly, as I noted before, you need certain windows updates to support WPA.  The easiest way to make sure is to install Service Pack 3.

Assuming you have XP, feel free to try the following:

Download this file:  ftp.us.dell.com/network/R219871.exe  .  It is a pack of drivers for dell branded broadcome wireless cards.  Your card series is not specifically listed, so it may not work.

Once the file has been downloaded, I recommend extracting the drivers without running the file.  Most archive programs (7zip, winRAR, or winZIP) should be able to accomplish this.  Extract the folder entitled "DRIVER_US".

Manually update the driver for your network card (using device manager and pointing the driver update process to the DRIVER_US folder).

Note that this will only update the driver.  If you have Dell's wireless utility installed, I would highly recommend that you uninstall it and let windows manage the connction.

Note as well that XP did not originally support either WPA or WPA2.  Please ensure that you have Service Pack 3 installed.

MyMyselfAndI,

Try using WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security(Personal), channels 1, 6 or 11, I use channel 11 and I use mixed mode because I have wireless adapters on my network. Save and exit, power everything off for 30 seconds, the power the modem(s) and router(s) back on. After you restart your computer, then try connecting.

Was told to make your passkey or password 13 letter or more.
