Dell Wireless 1703 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) speed issues

Hi - I've had a Dell XPS 2720 for about a year...my connection to my home wifi has been terrible that whole time...I have three other computers in my office (MacBook, Dell Latitude Laptop, and iMac) that all use the same connection and perform at much higher speeds. This morning I tested the speed via testmy.net and got a result of 1.7Mbps, which is pretty typical.  Is the wifi card just super cheap, or is there a compatibility issue?  Any thoughts or suggestions would be really appreciated.

Hi,

Have you taken a look at the Dell Network & Wireless Support Center?  There are some good articles in there that may help you out.

Some quick questions / suggestions:

1. What version of the driver for that card are you using?  You can go to our Dell Support Home Page, insert your service tag, and the pages will redirect you to the support pages for your system.  Click on the Drivers & Downloads section and check under Networking to see if there is an updated driver for your DW1703 card.  That would be my first recommendation.

2. What modem / router are you connecting to wirelessly?  Have you updated the firmware on that modem / router since you started using the XPS system?   That would be my second recommendation.

3. If the above 2 steps don't help, try removing all the security settings from your router, temporarily, and see if the connection speeds improve.  If they do, then it's a setting / configuration / compatibility issue with your system's card, security software, etc.   (Don't forget to reset your security back on after testing it).

Those 3 steps tend to be the best early steps to try.  See if any of them help, and if not, let us know and we'll see what else we can suggest.  There are some articles in the Networking Center (linked above) that you can try as well.

I hope this helps.

I have a All-in-one desktop without touchscreen with the same model wireless card and am having the same issues with the wireless dropping/slowing down to an extreme hault. I am in computer repair and have a decent working knowledge about computer systems and know this card should be technically able to connect to an 802.11 N 5Ghz channel but it is only able to connect to 2.4 channel frequency. I was attempting to see if this would solve the issues with the wireless being on a more qualitative and remote connection and obviously it did not work. Would like to find a way to get this resolved.
