Does Intel AMT (iAMT) cause Optiplex to power up and down after shut down?

Update:  My machine is an Optiplex 755, brand new, with WinXPPro SP3, and every ten minutes or so it was revving up for a few seconds even though it was Shut Down (whoosh from the fan or the DVD drive and front lights coming on for a few seconds - NOT a complete bootup). 

Most of the problem is now resolved, without Dell having to replace my motherboard.  But there is still one exception.

I have taken four steps, suggested by various sources:

1)  I disabled Intel AMT (iAMT), following the steps on page 271 of the  Dell user's Guide.  (By the way, this alone didn't seem to help, but maybe it's still a necessary step - who knows?)  Note this does NOT uninstall it.

2)  In Device Manager - Network Adapters - Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection - Properties -  Link Speed, I ran all the Diagnostics.  (No problems by the way.)

3)  In Device Manager - Network Adapters - Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection - Properties - Power Management, all the boxes under "Wake on LAN" were already UNchecked.

4)   Immediately after Shutting Down the Optiplex, I pulled the AC power line out and then hit the front ON button to drain any residual power in the motherboard.  There WAS a reaction - a very slight rev up that died almost immediately.

So, when the machine is Shut Down, it NO LONGER revs up for a few seconds every ten minutes or so.

Here's the exception:  When the  machine is Shut Down and I either connect or disconnect the LAN cable (or turn on or off my DSL modem/router), the machine revs up exactly the same way for a few seconds.  I do wonder why - any ideas?

Thank you for your help so far, I have now managed to stop it revving up when I connect the power, it is switched off at the wall at night so maybe this is a good thing.

Heres the steps I took:

INTEL ME STATE CONTROL - DISABLED

INTEL ME HOST POWER STATES set to ON in S0 (only active if the computer is pysically switched on) (default option apparently)

Disabled AMT also.

I have rebooted and then tried to wake on lan by sending magic packet and it worked.

Just trying now to see if it does the stupid rev thing every ten mins!

Could this explain why my computer never goes to sleep or hibernates either just stays on all the time?

Sorry - don't follow - why must you have the AMT enabled?  I understand AMT is a separate method for an IT person to reach a problem/malfunctioning PC on a LAN.  If that's not your set-up, why don't you turn AMT off, per my posts above?

I now have all the Wake on LAN triggers ON and I have not had a recurrence of the problem.  Indeed, I have a different problem - my Optiplex 755 doesn't always Wake on LAN (or Wake on Modem fax call) as it should.

Not sure what is problem is really, I use wol also so have to have the AMT enabled, I updated to the wndows 7 drivers but there is still this issue, perhaps dell could fix it!

Im running windows 7 and this issue is really doing my head in.

I have just installed the Intel NIC drivers off the intel site:

The link is for my own network card, I have uninstalled the old driver which was a different version despite windows update saying I had the latest installed.  I have then installed the new one and deleted my temporary files and restarted however its still doing exactly the same thing.

I use wake on lan settings as well but there is no magic packets being sent to the computer.

Richard - I am NOT a tech person - far from it.  When I had the revving-up problem, I called Dell and then became aware that my new 755 had this thing called AMT.  After some more questions and a bit of reading, I realized I had absolutely no need for AMT because I use my 755 at home on a home network through a modem-router.  I suppose if you're running a true office network and you're a tech master, AMT could be useful to "get inside" a non-functioning PC, but my 755 has now been running fine for over a year with AMT totally off, per the AMT instructions above in this long thread.

My NIC does indeed Wake on LAN - MOST of the time.  I now have ALL the WOL options turned ON, including Magic Packet (whatever that is).  No revving problem at all.  But sometimes my 755 does not actually wake - a very intermittent problem.

Well, that's all I know.  So I know a tiny bit about AMT.  But what is ME?  Same thing?

I suggest you experiment with my original steps, including pushing the power button immediately after you pull out the AC cord.  If the revving problem stops, then turn the WOL functions back on (but NOT AMT).

PS - Just now, from the office, I used LogMeIn to wake up my 755 at home.  My 755 was asleep but LogMeIn was indeed able to turn it on just now.

Intel AMT is what controls ur computer when it is off etc, Intel ME is the program that runs in the background when it is turned off or asleep etc and can be configured to be only on if the comp is switched on etc:

Its stopped doing the random REVS now! Hope hibernate and sleep will work now!

Richard - I don't think I have Intel ME.  What is it?

I only have AMT.

Or am I mistaken?
