Ethernet Controller Driver on Dimension 8250

Question

I reinstalled Windows XP on my Dimension 8250 yesterday and used the Dell disk to reinstall drivers but can't get the Ethernet Controller driver to install. When I open Device Manager I can see 'Network Adapters' and it shows the '1394 Net Adapter' as installed. Under that is 'Other Devices' with 'Ethernet Controller' and the Ethernet Cotroller is shown as not having a Driver installed. I tried to install the driver from the Dell disk that came with the computer without success. I also went to the Dell Support; Drivers & Downloads page and downloaded driver R56484 (Network Driver - Intel 10/100 LOM) but when I installed it I still couldn't get the Ethernet Controller to show it has a driver. I also installed 'Network Diagnostics Utility for Intel 10/100 LOM - R53599' and it just says that the Ethernet Controller needs a driver.   Does anyone know what is wrong?

Did you install the chipset drivers before even attempting to install drivers for other devices.  Without the chipset drivers, Windows will not be able to recognize and/or install drivers for many other devices.   Steve

I didn't install in the correct order and Dell Support was able to help me even though my support contract was expired. Thanks for the help.

dimension 8250 i just reinstalled i have a dimension 8250 as listed above iam having trouble getting my ethernet recognized i have installed the driver after the chipset as you stated in the forum but it still has the yellow question mark when i go into device manager what should i do ?
