Help sharing internet connection FROM desktop TO laptop via an ethernet cable

Hello everyone,

I need help sharing my internet connection FROM my desktop TO my laptop (dell inspiron 6000). In the past, I had no problem sharing the connection vice versa (from laptop --> desktop using the wireless on the laptop). However, I don't have wireless now and want to share my cable modem connection through my desktop to connect my laptop so I can be online on both computers at the same time.

I thought all I had to do was share the internet connection like I did before, only this time share it from the desktop to the laptop. When I tried, the connection showed up, but I could not get online on my laptop. I tried shutting off my Norton Security program to shut down the firewall (laptop) as well as my ZoneAlarm on my desktop, but it will wouldn't work. I'm completely perplexed...

I would greatly appreciate some help... if you can offer any, please do so! Thank you :)

PS - Also, is there a way to simultaneously share files between the 2 once I make the internet connection work?

Forgot to mention:

I have an RCN cable modem and the wire connects from the modem into the back of my computer into a slot with a diagram of 3 computers on it (is this meant to be open for networking only?).

I do have another slot for an ethernet cable that connects directly to my ethernet card. Is an ethernet card different than the connection used for a cable modem/high speed internet connection?

I tried plugging the cable modem cable into the ethernet slot and then using the "networking" slot to connect the 2 computers. When I did that, neither computer could access the internet at all. So I switched it back so my desktop would work again. I still cannot get my laptop to connect through the desktop.

Please help. Thanks!

It is very unclear how you are connecting things togther.  Are you connecting the modem to the computer via a USB cable?  Are you connecting the two computers together by a cross-over cable?  It would sure be a lot easier if you just spent $30 and got yourself a router to share the internet connection as well as providing a local network connection between the computers.

Hi there,

Is it possible for the computer itself to serve as a router? I guess that's my base question. I am not using USB to connect the cable modem to the computer. I'm using basic cross-over cable that came with the modem to connect from the modem to the computer (the cable company did it). I'm also using a cross-over cable (ethernet cable) to connect the 2 computers together from one ethernet jack to another.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks!

That first cable should not need to be a cross-over cable, should it?

If one were connecting the modem to a hub / switch then it would be a regular straight-through CAT5 or CAT6 Ethernet cable. I would think the first connection from the Modem to the first PC would also be straight through, wouldn't it?
