I can't renew my IP address!

Question

I'm not a very computer savvy person but I'll try to give a run down...  I installed the SP2, and afterwards, my network connection went bad.  I couldn't get on the internet, so I did a system restore to before I installed the pack.  Everything went well for about a week but now, suddenly, my connection isn't working again!  I tried to 'repair' my connection, but I kept getting an error about not being able to renew my IP address.  I went to the command screen and typed the '/renew' command but all I got was another error message.  I'm running a Windows XP desktop, and I don't know if there's any other information you need, but any and all help would be greatly appreciated!  I went through the troubleshooting instructions time and time again and still nothing.  If anyone could help me out, I'd be really grateful!  Thanks!

If worse, comes to worse, we can alway try reloading TCP/IP, or doing a "repair" installation of windows. But before we do that, are you on dialup or broadband?

Let's try this:

1) If your using broadband, power cycle (power down, then back on) your modem and/or router.
2) From the command line try: "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /renew". Post back the exact error message. Also, use "ipconfig /all" and post back the text returned.
3) Download, install and run, LSPFix. Don't fix anything, just post back the names of the program(s) you see (sitting in the winsock stack).
4) Double-check your adapter (connection) used to connect to the internet and make sure DHCP is enabled for DNS also.
5) Check "Device Manager" for the adapter (modem, NIC, USB) used to connect to the internet, and see if any problems are being reported.

See if some of that helps, and be sure to post back the result of step #2.

I'm on a broadband connection here in college.  I just recently discovered, too, that I can't do a system restore (not sure if that has any relevence).  I'm not sure what you mean by 'power cycle your router'.  Where is that located? I can't make heads or tails out of it except my default gateway is missing and I'll bet that's important to have... You won't be able to reset the router if your using the college's services, but here's a link on the ip address of ' 169.x.x.x'; ' 169' is the key.   See if that helps you to resolve it.   Mike.

I went to the site and wrote down everything that I could do to maybe resolve the problem.  I went back and tried them all one by one on my computer, but still no luck.  I guess I'll give the campus 'ResNet' crew a call and see if they can fix it somehow.  I can't imagine what my computer's problem is.  Thanks for the advice, though! -Katie

lol  Thanks, volcano, but it wouldn't have worked anyway becuase I need the net to get to the site! :smileyvery-happy:  No worries, though, I called my ResNet and they got me a Winsock CD and all is well again.  Now I just need to find out if I should try to reinstall SP2 or just leave well enough alone...

Of course you had to be on the internet to see or post your message, so you should have been able to download the file, copy to a disk and then copy from the disk to your computer. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you solved the problem.
