Inspiron 6000 w/ a Pre-n router

Question

I have yet to receive my 6000 from Dell (it should be here tomorrow). But I set up my network using a Belkin Pre-n router, as I read that it was the fastest and had the widest coverage area of any router.

What I want to know is if I will realize that speed with the card that is installed in the 6000? Or will I have to buy a pre-n card?

1) What is the point of pre-n then? It boasts faster speeds.

2) Once I physically remove the existing card, how do I remove all of its drivers?

Yes, you will need to intall a pre-N wireless adatper if you want to take advantage of the pre-N speed of the router.  You will likely have to remove the 802.11a/b/g card that comes with the new computer.  I hope you are not thinking that the faster speed of the pre-N router will improve your internet connection speed, because this will not be the case.  Even 802.11a runs faster than nearly all broadband internet connections.   Steve

1) What is the point of pre-n then? It boasts faster speeds. The faster speeds will only be realized if you frequently transfer large files between computers on the network. Most broadband internet connections limit the speed of the connection to less than about 5 Mbps. 802.11b has a speed of 11 Mbps, so even the slowest wireless speed is faster than the broadband connection. Pre-N, is not a standard, so all Pre-N devices can only connect with other Pre-N devices from the same manufacturer. Most of the Pre-N speed issue is just hype at this point, unless of course you are doing lots of local network transfers.

2) Once I physically remove the existing card, how do I remove all of its drivers? You don't need to remove the drivers. If the card is not installed, the drivers will not be loaded.

That still doesn't tell me anything, since an 802.11a/b/g card can be a PC-card, a Mini PCI card, or a USB device.  Steve

I don't have the system yet, but I'm assuming it's the mini-pci card since in the instruction manual (online), to remove it, they indicate a disconnection of antenna wires.
