Inspiron 700m mini PCI / ProSet 2100 question for 802.11g

Alright, so i crawled out of the dark ages and upgaded my 11b router to a G. Didn't relize my 700m didn't support 802.11g. After searching for solutions, I think i just ended up more confused.

Do I need to change out my mini PCI card, and ProSet software?
Can someone enlighten me on a solution? Sorry for the n00b question, but I guess thats what these forums are for :-).

My network adaptor says Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3A Mini PCI adapter.

TIA.

Most of the wireless "G" routers are backward compatible with the "B" protocol... what wireless router model did you upgrade to?

You could, if you wanted to... but, you don't need to if you're having no problems. You didn't list any...

Since you would probably notice very little difference on your Internet connection (most ISPs usually limit the speed to under 10Mbps), "B" speeds (11Mbps) are usually adequate... if you only use the wireless to access the Web.

Some of the reasons to upgrade to a "G" wireless adapter would be to gain faster file transfers between computers (Local Area Network), greater wireless range (with some wireless adapters) or sometimes to gain support for the latest "WPA2 security encryption"...

The latest WinXP/2000 driver from Dell (ver: 1.2.4.35 - Release Date: 7/27/2005), for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 is here ("click here").
The latest driver from Intel (Ver: 1.2.5.37 - Release Date: 10/26/2006), for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 is here ("click here").

I left a review ("click here" - dated 11/1/2006) for the wireless Mini-PCI card I purchased/installed in my Inspiron 8000. I prefer to use the "Boingo wireless client" with it ("click here")...

There are other wireless "G" Mini-PCI cards ("click here", "here", "here" or "here")

Rod

Aloha Rod,

I guess I did forget to mention that I am having no problems.  I was just hoping to boost up my laptop connection speed to 54Mbs.  Hooked a PCI card up to a remote desktop, and am getting great signal strength and connecting at 54Mbs.

You're information was very helpful.  Thanks.
I believe i'll be ordering one of the cards from Newegg.  I read your review of the MSI card (which is a great price) however I'm a bit concered on the signal strentgh, since it appears I can't utilize a U.FL antenna on the 700m.

Once again, thanks.

According to the graphic in the online I-700m manual ("click here" - scroll down to step "9a".), your I-700m has "two" available "U.FL antenna cable connectors"...

There are also external antennas to extend the signal range of the wireless card ("click here")...

Here are a few long range "external" wireless "G" solutions ("click here", "here" and "here").

Future Wireless-N (standards tentatively scheduled to be set sometime during the middle of 2007) products should offer even greater throughput & range.
Present "Draft-N" products (i.e.- "click here", "here", "here", "here" and "here") are "advertised" to have wireless rates of up to 300Mbps and 4x farther coverage than 802.11g and are backward compatible with the "G/B" protocols.

I just did a quick search and didn't really research "all" the wireless Mini-PCI possibilities. I just used Newegg because it's one of the places I order from... You also might want to check other places like Amazon.com, Buy.com, etc...

Dell's Wireless adapters: "click here" (click on Dell in the left-frame for the Dell Mini-PCI adapters)
