Inspiron 7500 - Problem with PCMCIA not working - 'pcmcia mtd-0002' error.

Question

Suddenly my PCMCIA slots are not working and my network card is not working. I am running Windows XP SP 2. Whenever I boot, the new hardware wizard starts and says it's searching for the drivers for the device PCMCIA MTD-0002. It cannot find any drivers on the SP2 CD or on the Internet. Has anyone run into this as well? Any help greatly appreciated.

Have a look in device manager and report back, preferably with a screenshot, of what you see.

The card is recognized like MTD-0002,  it´s not the real model, for that reason it does not find drivers in the CD. Try to update the bios with the latest version. If the problem continue and if you have a Phoenix BIOS. disable sound blaster , but don´t  disable the onboard audio.

Thank you both for responding. I updated the BIOS last night with the latest available here on the Dell support site - Phoenix BIOS A14. I went through the BIOS configurations screens and did not find any options regarding sound or sound blaster. Here is a picture of the device manager on my laptop:

I suggest you try deleting pcmcia mtd-0002 preferably in safe mode then reboot and see if your device manager goes back to normal.

Booted into Safe Mode and removed the PCMCIA MTD-0002 device, but not luck. Once I rebooted the hardware wizard appeared with the same device.

This problem is common, happens with several PCMCIA card models and not only with Dell computers.  There are differents solutions, in this case is necessary to see the computer to try to solve the problem.  Another possible solution is: eject it and after windows is running plug it back in.

Thank you for all the responses. It turns out the network card is bad. I plugged the network card into another laptop and the same problem happened. I tried a different network card in the PCMCIA slot and it worked. So it turned out to be a hardware failure issue.
