Inspiron 8000, internal NIC doesn't show up in Windows

I'm troubleshooting this remotely - They're in London and I'm in Massachusetts - So I don't have the laptop in front of me. With that said, here's the problem:

The user did a fresh install of XP Pro on the laptop, but the internal network card isn't showing up in device manager or network devices. I made sure to check the "other devices" in device manager, but there's nothing there either.

I had the user go into the BIOS to see if there was a setting to disable the NIC anywhere in there, but she couldn't find anything. Is there anywhere to disable the NIC that I might be missing? Any other ideas on how to enable the device?

sounds like a bad nic, I would check safe mode tho.  sometimes ghost drivers will show up preventing the install of ur nic.
