Intel 537EP V9xDF PCI Modem not to speed in Dimension 3000

Question

Hi--

The modem in my Dimension 3000, the Intel 537EP V9xDF PCI 56k modem has connectivity problems . I have at best connected at 36400bps., but mostly 28800. I have installed the Dell upgrade, R74542 I ran the DIAGFT32.exe utility. which at 56k it said it should take 2.1 minutes to download. It took this computer 4.5 minutes to download. I also switched the slot that the modem is in to a different one and switched where the phone line plugs into it.

No difference

I am able to connect at 44000 and sometimes at 48000 bps. with my old Packard Bell computer, so I think the lines are good. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would like to avoid having to buy a new modem but if that is what it takes, will do so.

The Intel 537 EP modem is an inexpensive "Winmodem". By their nature, winmodems are sensitive to line noise and do not perform as well as "Controller Based" modems (sometimes called hardware modems). Many older modems are hardware modems and handle line noise fairly well. This results in better connect speeds and more reliable connections. For the best dial-up connection possible, consider replacing your Winmodem with a good Hardware modem. These can cost up to $75 for a good quality modem, but the performance difference is worth it.

FLBill, The Dell computers do have a 'modem helper' program which is used primarily by Dell Techies to diagnose modem problems.  It works with most Conexant modems, so you should have no problems with it. Steve

I took your advice Steve, Thanks. I remembered had a 56 K CXT which I take to be Conexant which was in a parts Gateway that I had in the garage. I took it out, put it in the Dimension, , Windows found it, installed the drivers and I'm connecting now at 44000, 45333, and even 48000. Steve, In my searches for an answer, I remember reading that there may be problems with a different modem being installed and a "modem manager program" on the Dimension. What is your advice about that? Is there a disable or something else that I should do?

You seem to know what you are talking  about w/ this stuff. i wonder if u can help me . i have a dell 4600 w/ XP on it. It will not take my pass word , nor can i get on line i did that big test it said the msg ide failed / blank media-or non, i have been working on this othercomputer since august, and ready to kick it in to the wall:smileymad:do u think u can help me , i did call dell , they said it was not a hardwear prob. that it was a softwear prob , they want $100.00 bucks to fix it , i just cant do that , please help if u can , :smileysad:
